Not all the sig links actually get picked up by Google. I changed my sig about a month ago and only about one quarter of my posts show up in google searching for site:forums.digitalpoint.com +newkeywordinsig.

Nice forum and very interesting thread, all 800 posts of it and one of the few I have seen that has conducted and research as detailed as this.

Can someone who is up to date on the big picture provide a synonsis of what has been learned/deduced so far?

 

Hi Mel welcome to the forum and to this thread - have you read all 800 posts? It is time consuming but well worth it - I have already reread it once to keep on track, Compar [who seems to be away at the moment] was suggesting that we "weed it out" a little, but it seemed to be a bit too time consuming for all of us. McDar is fishing [at the weekends].

So have a read and maybe we may summarise soon.

 

Not the case. I'm helping some school kids with a new site and added a sig link on Wednesday or Thursday (bit frazzled so can't remember exactly which day). The site is only linked by my sig and Google first spidered it last night.

Maybe the spider does follow sig links but doesn't evaluate them for the SERP algo. In other words it might ignore the link for anchor text and or PR.

This makes sense when you study how these spiders work. Each new link found simply get put on a list for spidering later, or immediately if no other tasks scheduled. Only after indexing, the algo is applied. So there is a distinction between indexing and evaluating.

 

Make no mistake Google reads the signatures - what it does with them is another matter. Ignore them ...mmm probably not...filter them ...more likely, with a dampening effect....and other possibilities as well

 

I think schlottke would disagree with this. See his post http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=5107&postcount=46

I would agree with foxy that there may be some dampening/filtering but looking at the backlinks to schlottke's site it's difficult to say that the PR, Anchor Text value and SERP placement doesn't come from the forum sig links.

Fox- have you seen any deterioation in serps for your sites since you took the DP links out of your sig? I took mine out 2 weeks ago and have not suffered (OK my site is not related- but no changes)

 

No - not at all [other than the forum pages have disappeared], however I didn't get much time to compare - as, being fed up with it sticking at the level it fell to, I placed a similar page on another unrelated site. The original page disappeared as to, I might add, had the index page of the site when the specific weber page appeared

Now the only things in common were the page url weber-bbqs.htm,and the page title, Weber BBQs. Nothing else for the page but for the site index page I had used Weber BBQs as the title [identical for all] and of course the link to the page was Weber BBQs

What I have deduced from this is that the title tag and the page url are the determining factors in possible mirror pages determination, if it is deemed a mirror page [over and above the text] as if you do a allin search on McDars tool you find the pages still there.

I await to see whether it comes back, as the sleeping bag example has done the same, but I will only wait a few more days [as Google seems to do things within days now] and then alter the titles etc.

 

yep - it's a strange world at the mo

I really revved up my KWs on one of my sites and had H1 in all the titles every image had an alt text - KW density went from 3% to 12%

Serp = no change

Interesting read, and so far the only conclusion I see that is somewhat firm is that forum sig links are not counting as anchor text links any more.

This confirms my feeling that since the June 1 backlinks update I see almost no backlinks reported with the link:search (see this post for more details. I have been informally tracking this for the past few months, and just went through my backlinks tonight for confirmation:

The @URL search returns ten times more links than the link search and after a long check of these, the only links from forums (I post in around ten) are where the URL is in the body of the text or in the print pages at SEO chat. Even found a couple of plugs that I was not aware of

I believe that I can see a slight decrease in rankings corresponding to the dropping of the forum links,though that is a bit hard to track, since some of my terms in the links have not dropped at all but one has dropped six places, but since that was from #1 to #7 it's concerning.
I have now placed a few new links in the hope of recovering, but that does not nearly make up for the shortfall of perhaps 4,000 sig links.

Google has certainly made some changes as to how it is dealing with links, but I am uncertain at this time, what adjustments they have made.

Both Bob and Foxy removed the links from their sigs on June 11th. So, we expected the number of links Google to count from this forum to drop dramatically. But, if you look at the results of the last update...

Still, of total backlinks reported for this page, DPForums was the largest source. I am not certain if, of the 149 reported, they are devalued or if Google has not done something to devalue multiple links from a single source in general.

By this I mean, were the 56 links from Bob's site devalued as they were all from a single site as well?

It is unfortunate that we intentionally removed the links, as now it is hard to determine how much of the change in placement was directly related to our dropping the links and how much can be attributed to Google's changes.

Still no placement for either page in the regular serps!

Bob's page has finally caught up to Foxy's for allinanchor placement.

It is still curious to me that neither page is listed anywhere in the regular serps for ANY of these keywords!

 

I would like to comment on the 100+ drop the experimental page took on Friday.

Originally, I assumed that it was due to the loss of all of the signature links, but now I am starting to think it may have been a combination of that and a Google adjustment.

I am leaning toward this now because I have started to see threads here and there regarding the same type of phenomenon that occurred to others last Friday as well.

In another thread on this forum I read of two Real Estate sites that went from page one to nowhere to be found that same Friday.

Things we had in common:
Age:
1). They all were started around the same time (end of March, beginning of April).
Links:
2). They all had many links but those links where from only a few different websites.

The Real Estate sites' links were themed, for the most part, and did NOT have a large portion of their links from forums.

This has lead me to believe that Googles latest tweek (last Friday) was an "attack" on multiple links from a single websites.

The experiment page had ALL of it's links from only 6 different sources.

If multiple links from a single website have been devalued, it would have meant a big blow as witnessed this past Friday.

This may also explain why experiment 2 pages, although #10 & #11 for allinanchornline poker games, have yet to make it anywhere into the regular serps. They are showing 1785 links BUT those links are from ONLY 7 different sites.

Any thoughts or comments??
