McDar Experiment

It appears that we are pretty well stuck at something over #100 for this page. I'm not sure if anyone has any idea or good explanation for why we suddenly went from #43 to #144 on June 25? There are three posible explantions are far as I'm concerned. However none of them are particularly satisfying as far as I'm concerned. They are:

1. The lost of the single PR7 link caught up with the page.
2. The lost of the approximately 4,000 sig links caused the drop in SERP placement.
3. Google is tweaking their algo and this page along with a lot of others took a dive for no known, or obvious, reason.

If you think the explanation is 3. then the only thing to do is sit tight and hope that Google untweaks their algo and the page return to a position closer to where the allinachor and other attributes seem to suggest it should be.

If we think the answer is 2. then we could put up all these sig links again and watch to see if there is any recovery.

If we think it is 1. we could try and find someone with a PR7 or even a PR8 page who would put up a link in the name of science and see if it recovers.

The other option is try some SEO method that we haven't applied to date. Has anybody got any ideas?

Just when you think it's bad, it gets worst!

Looking at today's results, across datacenters, you'll notice that the experimental page was in position #171 on 6 datacenters! Is this indicative of yet another blow to the page?

Looking over the Complete Report this morning, it is also important to note the instabitlity of the pages across the datacenters.

Since about mid June, the datacenters have been reporting about 4 different positions.

We may want to try adding back the sig links, for a short time anyway, just to see what positive effect it may have.

There is something very strange going on with Google. Take the numbers above. If they had 70 of my InfoPool pages indexed on July 1, how can they have lost 6 of them by July 5?

I can always understand that there may be pages that they haven't indexed yet, but once they get them indexed how are they losing them or dropping them?

Could this be related to the large numbers of backlinks reported by others that are just shown as the URL (no cache, no snippet) as if Google had just flagged the page for spidering? Just seems strange that it is happening at a time when others are reporting weird changes in the SERPs and to their backlinks listing. I can't believe that that many servers had that many pages unavailable to Google just recently. I'm even starting to see these one liner backlinks appear for pages that have been indexed for years. Strange.

So, does anyone want to speculate on what caused this latest 40 to 50 place drop?

 

Hi All,

Just checking in from vacation land.

If you look at the "complete report" (link in daily update), you'll notice I added some hyperlinks for the entries of June 27th and July 6th. These links will take you to forum discussions about similar drops in other peoples sites in the same time frame.

Whatever happened that caused the drop in ranking to the experimental page, we are not alone. This leads me to believe that Google may be "filtering" some kinds of linking strategies.

I read the SEO Chat threads that you provided links to. The experimental page is not alone in experiencing any this problem, but I didn't think there were any answers or real insight into the cause or fix for the problem given or even suggested.

The closest thing that I have seen lately to what may be going on is the Google patent that Nohaber posted in this thread http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=15595&postcount=18.

While it seem to talk exclusively about "related" pages if Google can do this or is starting to do this it might well explain the problems we are experiencing.

 

If you relate this back to the PM I sent you a little way back it would then start to make sense would it not?

My initial response was bollocks not another February disaster!! But I then decided that I would immediately place a page, on one of our sites, that I had ready to test my PM'd theory and, bingo I am now 7, but also, another phrase that was 9 and stable moved to 6.

The links are there to indicate that the big changes were NOT isolated to the experimental page alone.

If we try to explain or evaluate the changes in the results without considering the larger picture as well, we could just be chasing our own tails.

In light of the fact that many are reporting big changes, it would be inaccurate to conclude that the last big plunge was due to the loss of sig links. It most likely was a combination of the two factors (our change in sig links PLUS Googles changes).

It is the frequent changes that Google seems to be implementing that is making it most difficult to attribute "cause and effect" relationships in this experiment.

Believe it or not, Google did use to be more stable.

I understand that. And we are certainly not alone. But then the question remains what do we do next.

The problem with this experiment is that we can't evaluate the effect of our changes because Google is shifting everything at the same time.

So here are our options as I see it.

1. Do nothing until our current position and results really stabilize.

2. Try and find a broader base for our backlinks.

3. Try to place our backlinks on more relevant or theme related pages.

4. Stop obsessing on allinanchor: and use some other anchor text, even if it is only to use the singular "sleeping bag"

 

I don't think 1. will prove much more than what has been proven already - that what was working is not anymore.

But 2. does have merit and I believe 3. should be used.

With 4. I believe we should be using related anchor phrases like "sleeping bag liners" or "bag liners" or "undersheets for sleeping bags" [not being an expert on sleeping bags I would not know!] from pages that have relevance in the text.

Lastly when all this has been done and we have seen the results I think we should try my swictheroo as PM'd to you. But only then as a long shot.

 

At this point, I have no ideas. I will go along with whatever you two decide!
