I am still convinced that Google is busy inventing a "better (read different) mouse trap" as they are trying to break away from the patents held by Stanford.

They most likely want to be totally free from using any Stanford patented algos by the time they go public.

    IMHO

Look at the instability across the datacenters DAILY. (see Complete Report)

Look at the range of some of the positions...

    07/05/2004 [5 DCs #119, 2 DCs #124, 6 DCs #171]
    07/15/2004 [6 DCs #169, 5 DCs #188, 2 DCs #203]

This is some MAJOR turbulance! It is not the norm for businesses to be in such a state of constant change.

This is not in just a few categories or isolated. Many of the sites I monitor with keyword tracker took big leaps today (15-20 positions). I just cannot attribute this to normal, everyday flux.

Our little pages are like boats on a stormy sea. We think we can control where we are going right now, but I think we are all lucky just to stay afloat from day to day. Once the sea calms, then you can adjust your course.

OH, by the way - THIS REALLY SUCKS! :)

    You've got that right!

Whether they are a commercial or private organization they are a major force in the Internet, and exert a major influence on a lot of people's livelihood.

The instability in their SERPs is a disgrace.

tomdude48 on seo chat (http://forums.seochat.com/t13156/s.html) has posted two interesting threads one of which that reminded me of this thread. He reports text links placed from pagerank 8 site around April 1st, to some of his clients sites have not seemed to affect their SERPs. This reminded me of how long it seemed to take Alek's link from page rank 7 site to kick in. Conjecture: Do links from sites with higher pageranks take longer to be felt in serps than links from lower pageranked sites. This does not make much sense unless it is a way to try to combat selling of pagerank.

There is another significant issue in regard to Tomdude48's page rank 8 site which may or may not have any relation. The page rank 8 site has been copied and placed online with only name of site changed. See tomdude48's original post. The pirated version is not in Google index and represents an older version of his site.

Interesting theory. I just purchased a PR8 link for one of the sites I look after a few days ago. We should have a new PR/BL update shortly. I'll let you know if my new PR8 backlink is reported when that happens.

I have modified my PR chart to do "what if" scenarios. If you use rustybrick's new tool to find out excatly how many links you have now and what PR value they are, you can then drop these results into my chart and do "what ifs" by adding additional link of various values.

When I do this for the page I mentioned above, and them plug in 1 additional PR8 link, the chart forecasts that I should attain PR7 for my page. It will be interesting to see if this really happens on the next upgrade.

If anyone would like to experiment with my new "what if" spreadsheet let me know and I'll post a link to it.

I still think there is some sort of sandbox applied to "interesting" keywords - for instance, from the same www.komar.org page, I added a link to budweiser airboat and that ranks #1 two days later ... but that's not exactly a competive/interesting keyword! ;-)

It is an interesting theory and would not surprise me if there is some truth to this ... or perhaps a dampening function is applied ... i.e. takes a few months or so for the full "weight" of the PR8 to be applied.

Shannon: love that picture on your website - typifies the Texas boonies!

    alek

P.S. On the sleeping bags, I seem to recall there was a jump shorty after the addition of the www.komar.org link ... and upon removal, no changes for sometime, but then a big drop a few weeks later (other things going on, so hard to say what was causing what) - sorry, I'm not going to ready through the whole dang thread yet another time! ;-)

Alek, you just shot down that conjecture. It did not seem logical but I have no direct experiences with page rank 7 and above sites.

Do let us know when your pagerank 8 link kicks in, Compar.

Meanwhile I shall lurk and read some more.

Actually, I didn't mean to shoot it down - let me know how to edit/rephrase what I wrote above, but for competive/interesting keywords, I think your theory has a lotta merit and thought I said above (?)

Keeping lurking AND posting - I don't want to be accused of messing with Texas! ;-)

    Smyrl,

Did you know your web site doesn't display correctly in Netscape 7.1? The picture displays way over to the right so that even on my 1024x768 resolution I have to scroll a long way to the right before I can see the picture.

Thanks, Bob. I did not know. My computer running Netscape crashed and I have not been diligent in observing sites on different size monitors running different browsers. I will look into it. I have been checking my sites on public library's computers BUT they are running 800 x 600 resolution.

Alek, I did realize you said said there might be a dampening function but as to a blanket across the board statemnt seem that is just not the case. Like you I have no desire to reread the entire thread - a nice tool Shawn did not write ... It has gotten to be as bad as War and Peace.

    Thanks for the input.

    Bob

I had the same on netscape

wrt higher page links - I had PR7s from many domains and these seemed to kick in fast (and in the last G update) for PR value - however, I am sure there is a delay difference in SERPS

so, a link may give you higher PR but higher SERPS come later

These links are now 7 weeks old so I hope to see a jump soon

Excellent point! The sandbox effect was never thought to effect PR ranking. It only seem to effect a sites "rightful" place in the SERPs. It is so easy to forget this. Thanks for reminding us leeds.

Well, with the new update just starting, the experimental page has dropped from 325 reported Backlinks to 129.

Only 11 of Bob's links included this time!

The #1 site for the search has dropped from 288 backlinks reported to 140.

Boy, what is G doing with backlinks these days?
