We have made two changes, Alek's link removed and Bob's and Foxy's sig links removed.

This page has now taken 5 giant steps backwords!

Anyone out there still not convinced that Google is making significant algo changes?

Personally, I think when the stocks go on sale, will mark when they are reasonably satisfied with their "new" Google. The Google Sea won't calm much before then.

Caryl,

Are there any changes in these numbers today? A lot of people are reporting that the update does not seem to be totally over, and they are seeing adjustments or changes.

 

Bob,

Our links droped to 129 and have basically stayed there. There was a short time yesterday that I saw the 325 being reported again, (very brief time) but then it has gone back to 129 on all of the datacenters.

I have not gone through the links again to verify that they are the exact same "mix" that was originally reported though.

I Thought it would be interesting to see how the top ten for the keyword search "sleeping bags" fared as a result of this last "update".

Below is a link to a comparison of the Keyword Analysis Tool (link below in sig) results from June 29th with columns added with today's results.

It is interesting that the top ten seam to reamain steady, however their backlinks and allinanchor positions have changed.

Any comments or observations are welcome and appreciated!

 

All it tell me is that it doesn't make any real sense. Assuming that the parameters we are looking at do indeed have a correlation to the SERP placement, it is hard to see why the page isn't in the top 10.

I can only see two possible explanations:

1. Our links have been badly devalued -- but why?

2. We are missing some major parameter. I can even think of what to start to look for, but an analysis of the top ten sites looking for some parameter they have in common and which we do not have might prove useful. The problem is that there may be no way to measure the parameter.

 

Bob,

I don't know if you noticed, but I did add in the Yahoo! reported links.

The one main parameter we really cannot accurately assess in the Total number of links to the page (as used by Google).

The Yahoo links surely indicate that that number could be in the thousands for every one of the top ten (accept Big Agnes -Manufacturer).

The questions still remain, (1)would we be in a better position with the added sig links? (just to increase total links) (2)Would Google have acknowledged those links? (even now, G is only acknowledging a fraction of the links pointing to the page)

Where should we go from here?

Edited to add: Look at the results again! I have just added a row (under the experiment page) for McDar's main page, which is now ahead of the experiment page in the reg results for "sleeping bags".

 

I see it as a significant "hit" that the page has taken, the dramatic loss of counted links from Bob's and my regular web pages!

Those backlinks dropped had descent PR value. (where as the sig links did not)

The reason we removed the sig links is that the page had already dropped about 100 places in the SERP. This drop seemed to coincide with the addition of these sig links, so we back them off. But I'm ok with putting them back.

The other thing we could do is try and radically diversify the source of our inbound links. This would mean solicting help from a ton of the members of the forum to each put up a single link to the page. In turn we would need people to be commit this link for a prolonged period, unlike Aleks who put it up and then took it down before we could really assess it's impact.

 

I think my liink was up there for long enough to have some impact - for instance, I recently added a page about the budweiser airboat and linked from www.komar.org like I did for sleeping bags - two days later, it was ranked #1 for that phrase and in the 30's for airboat ...

Thanks for responding! I am open to either option.

Adding the sigs again would give us some indication of the actual ground lost when we omitted them, as I think some of our drop was due to G algo change.

Getting others to donate a link would be interesting as well.

 

I agree and am ready to add back the sig links. Foxy we are waiting for your concurrence.

I think it would be an interesting test to add the link from your site again for a period of one week only.

That should be enough to boost us then drop us in a quick time frame. It would certainly be significant proof of the value of a single high PR link.

What do you think, Alek? Would you be open to this?

Sorry ... was a one-time good deal to encourage people to consider using their Google Toolbar to use idle CPU cycles to help medical research.

 

So Alek, what you are really saving is that you had no interest in, or commitment to, the experiment.

While I think the use of the toolbar is a good idea, I've always run it on my computer, I don't understand what was so terrible about leaving the link up. As a supporter of the toolbar research I think we legitimately expected that you would support our research also.

You make some wild claims about the efficacy of a link from your site. Here's your chance to put your money where your mouth is and demonstate the formidable power of your link to everyone who watches this thread.

Well, I was only suggesting 1 week. How much harm can that do? Is it a problem with PR drain?

Maybe I am missing something here. (it wouldn't be the first time)
