McDar Experiment

Well there are theorys and then there are theorys. Most of the half decent ones have something to substantiate them. The fact that this one doesn't just indicates to me it's probably worth.

Until there was some more data to substantiate it I wouldn't waste my time testing it.

 

I started to wonder IF the signature links may be the culpret of our being MIA in 15 of the datacenters. So I started to look at the results of some competitors.

I found this competitors site to be in a wide range of positions (#34 to #107) as well. A check on their reported links indicated NO forum links to the page.

the attachment is a snapshot of results on the .104 bank of datacenters.

 

It is an interesting hunch/theory - it perhaps has some relevance in that one phrase "anchor text that isn't similar to the homepage keyword" [notice I left off the word density] would make some logical [read Google mindset] sense in that they would be attempting to remove SEO.

However I tested the weber bbqs for KWD against another page KWD [not weber] that ranks highly in competitive situations and that had just moved up 4 places and I found that the KWD was about the same at .....wait for it....40%!!

As you can see I don't care too much about KWD!

What is interesting though, and perhaps more relevant, the weber bbqs page/s that dropped out of site to 300+ was replaced, with another wbbq page that I had placed on another site, at 25, and that page has the same KWD as the others and about the same number of links.

So I tested the first pages in a search for weber bbqs

1. www.webergrills.com KWD 0% IBL32 Result=0
2. forums.digitalpoint.com/archive/index.php/t-481.html KWD 12% IBL 0 Result=0
3. forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=481 KWD 0% IBL 0 Result=0

I stopped just here as the results are pretty conclusive don't you think? The most important points IMHO here are that the first result the page does not have any mentions of the phrase at all and neither does it rate on allinanchor for the phrase, and so the modified statement above about the KW phrase and text perhaps has some relevance!

So as Bob says we should let things settle down before changing things in this test but if you would like me to experiment with the "control" of wbbqs I am more than happy to

How would you propose to test for keyword density for your page?

But, then again, we do have in depth records of the experimental page, so once G settles down it should be easy to see if the change makes a difference.

FYI:

As of 11:27PM EST 8/3/2004

I noticed 5 additional Datacenters went offline.

They are still offline this AM.

The Datacenters are:
216.239.59.98 (bank .98)
216.239.53.98 (bank .98)
66.102.7.98 (bank .98)
216.239.59.103 (bank .103)
64.233.161.98 (bank "new")

In January of this year, Google pulled offline it's .100 bank of Datacenters. They were the ones known as ie. gv, cw, dc, ex, etc. There was about 11 US datacenters in all.

At the same time they started up approx. 56 Datacenters US to replace them. That number grew to 61 shortly thereafter. These are the Datacenters that are monitored by the Datacenter Watch Tool (link in sig below).

As can be seen in the Complete Report of our experiment, many of these datacenters have been taken offline starting around May 20th.

To date, 33 of these Datacenters are now offline.

Commentary: Maybe this is an indication that the "search for a new Algorithm is winding down" and the need for so many testing areas has diminished.

I just don't think you can draw any valid conclusions from these single page and relatively uncontrolled tests. The first problem is that we don't know or understand what Google is currently doing. There just seems to be a vast inconsistency in Google results, so to draw any conclusion based on the type of information you site above really doesn't prove anything IMO.

I can show you pages that rank well in allinanchor and all the other criteria we all feel are important. By any of these measures these pages should be top 20 or 30 at a minimum and yet they are nowhere on the horizon.

I don't know what Google is doing, but the whipsawing of so many pages just makes it impossible to draw any valid conclusions.

It really makes no sense to try to test anything at the time being considering Googles current state.

The only thing that makes sense is to batten down the hatches and just ride out the storm.

After all, how long could it last? ha,ha,ha!

 

it's all very odd.

Any new page on my forum OR website gets in the index within 2 days - and if it's a low competitive phrase we are in the top 5

BUT, for my main KWs - I am not moving (well, only backwards !)

Using the keyword tool I enter my domain www.homeless.org.au and the keyword homeless - and for the past two days I have been getting the results for another domain.

 

You are getting that result because your url is in the "snippet" of the other guy's listing in the Google results...

if you use www.homeless.org.au/ you can avoid that.

 

Bob perhaps you misunderstood me - I was proving that the PKsynths hunch had a very small basis of standing - that is that it didn't stand up to scrutiny at all.

3 results with f...all, that is 0, on pages that are uncompetitive [that means nothing to screw up the factors] is not the way to base a theory.

On the other hand we could test the modified statement "anchor text that isn't similar to the homepage keyword" on the bbq pages, if we three want, on the basis of "anchor text that isn't similar to the homepage keyword" without harm to the main experiment.

In other words we could test, and then implement, if proven, when stability has come around.

But then I'm not sure it is worth the hassle as it doesn't stand up as a theory so far!

Hi folks

Real interesting thread. Just skimmed through most of it because it's so long, so I probably missed a lot.

I was wondering about this from post #27. Google no longer post an explanation for allinanchor as far as I know but I assume this was the explanation they once posted.

It looks like the allinanchor operator is just a ranking of Anchor text on the actual web page much like the other "allin" operators- url, text and title are only concerned with web page stuff. I always assumed and got the impression from reading forums and the like that it included anchor text from IBL's.

If it were just on page anchor text it might explain a few things such as

the high correlation between allinanchor and allintext results
and why allinanchor for sleeping bags never really moved too much with the adding and removing of the sig files.

What do you think?

 

Fascinating suggestion. The question then is, is allinanchor a measure of the number of occurrences of the anchor text on the specific "page" or or on the entire "web site"?

The quotation says "This command will show you how (you) rank based on the Anchor Text of your web page." In fact it is generally thought that Google always deal with pages not web sites.

Now if we agree that it is pages rather than websites then the McDar sleeping bags page should clearly be #1 for all in anchor. By my quick count there are 31 occurrences of "sleeping bags" in anchor text on that page. Compared with the #1 page, both in allinanchor and in the SERP, which only has two links using that term, as far as I can see from a quick inspection.

Now Amazon which is #2 both in the SERP and allinanchor doesn't appear to have "sleeping bags" anywhere on the page. They seem to have opted strictly for the singular form and use "sleeping bag" the same way as the experimental page and about the same number of times.

Then if you use McDar's tool for "sleeping bag", the Amazon page doesn't show up anywhere in the top 1,000 in the SERP or top 100 in the allinanchor.

So I agree your theory would seem to explain a number of anomalies, but I think a fairly superficial test like I have just done pretty will rules out the possibility that it is only anchor text from the subject page.

 

I just remembered that allinanchor is an option on the Google Advanced Search page and the language there is a little clearer and tends to confirm the result of your quick test.

I'd say that would include onpage and inbound anchor text.
