schlottke - please wait for caryl to give the go-ahead... I think the consensus was to wait and try not to make any changes to be able to measure the coop ad network impact in isolation.

and ... it seems to be making a big impact ... will wait for the official posting, but it certainly looks good from my neck of the woods!

It seems the network weight assigned to the site has shifted based on the site gaining new indexed pages... when I first put it in it was roughly 26k ... I noticed it edged up to 27k which I didn't think was worth mentioning. Just checked it now and it is was at 40k so I cut in half down to 20k (i.e. I put in a totally unrelated link to cut the 40k down cause I am betting the 40k is too much weight for a single KWP).

I'm not sure what the hell you are talking about. Are you suggesting the the coop weight is evenly distributed across the number of ads or keyword phrases you are using?

And if this is the case does anyone know the relationship between the number of ad exposures and weight?

I guess it is like that.....so when do we get to number 1 then?

 

If the Ad network rotates links and it was the addition of those ads that boosted the experiment page, then I would say that the position would bounce around.

We'll also have to find out from Nitin what exactly he did when he "adjusted" the ad down.

 

I think what Nitin was saying is that he was at a total of 26k weight, and then he jumped to 40k so he added an additional site so each would be splitting the 40k rather than all of the weight being put towards the sleeping bags KW.

 

Schlottke do proceed [let Caryl know] as I think that there is a corresponding increase in the numbers from the other sites giving a broad spread during this same period which should not be overlooked.

Exactly. I'll go into a bit more detail for those not using the ad network...

I had a single site in the network that had a weight of 26k. For any site you can put in upt 10 different urls and your weighting will be spread evenly across those URL's.

Initially, I put in 2 URLs (well i URL, but 2 anchors) ... "Sleepings Bags" and "Sleeping Bag". But, as requested I got rid of "Sleeping Bag" within 24 hours I think so all 26k weighting was going to the single link of "Sleeping Bags".

The weighting for any site will adjust as that site gains or loses pages in the index. It wasn't through any action I took but the site I used got a jump in indexed pages which equated to a jump in weighting to about 40k. I figured 20k was closer to the orginal 26k then was 40k, so added a second totally unrelated url so bring down the weighting of "Sleeping Bags" to 20k.

Now, any impact to SERP based on the change to the ad network is going to be at least a week delayed, so none of this affects the jump to #4.

As to someone else's q re: jumping positions based on the randomness of the ad network .... yeah, it can happen. But, for the majority of the terms I am using with the network, after an initial bounce period they fall into a position that doesn't seem to fluctuate any more than normal SERP movement.

BTW - I don't think we're settling in at #4 ... if this tracks like my other KWP's in the network we are still going to move up over the next couple of weeks. 20k is a lot to throw at a single KWP ... I would say for semi-competitive KWPs similar to "Sleeping Bags" I have only been throwing 5-10k at them and getting top 5 SERP positions.
