It was not the intention of this thread to discount the value of on-page optimization, but since last November and Googles "Florida" update, on-page optimization alone is not effective in placing pages where keywords are moderately or highly competitve.

In those cases, the only thing the will get you good placement is linking. But, linking alone was found to be not enough, linking with good anchor text was required.

The subject and topic of this thread have been focused on the results of the Keyword Analysis Tool (link is in my signature below) and the relationship of actual links, Google reported links, and Allinanchor position as reported by Google.

The reason this experiment has lingered so long is that Google has made so many and frequent changes in this time frame, that it has been imposible to distinguish the results of our "experimental changes" and Googles changes.

If you click on the link Complete Report in the daily update, you will find hyperlinks on a number of the "Page Positions" reported, especially when large jumps occured. These links will take you to forum discussions on that same day that show that the jumps we experienced coincided with major changes to MANY pages at the same time. Therefore, it was impossible to claim our position change was the result of our link changes.

So, do you think this nice ranking is due to the recent coop ads?

 

There is only one way to find out...

Leave it as it is for two weeks to see if it stays.

Then remove the coop ads to it and see it fall into oblivion again (well, down to 15-20).

My guess is that it was due to the additional coop links indeed.

 

Certainly, it will be interesting to see if the page will stabilize in the top ten somewhere!

I do feel at this point, that more progress was made when the backlinks were spread out from many on a few urls to many from several urls.

Perhaps a more interesting twist would be to limit the links to just one per url. This would give us a better idea of how Google views multiple links from single urls.

 

My gut feel is most certainly the "new" spread of links.

However, not to assume this, is the better course, and to then test by using the tops30 approach or mcdars.

Then of course it would not be me if I hadn't run a "control" alongside would it?

Ski France was runniing at 5 in March and then went out to 8 and then September 5 to 15 and on down to 17

On October 22 it was 14 - [that is 1 day after the initial #4 position for sleeping bags] and I placed coops on the ski site for the first time - by the 25th it was 9 and now it is 8 [if I could get my index page to validate, rather than an internal page, I would have a higher weighting and I believe a higher position]

So even without further testing I would say yes

We seem to have finally stabalized. If this is the case it is probably time to try and figure out exactly what we did to drive this page to #2.

I would say that the diversity of link from diffeerent IP addresses was a major factor, but the coop ad scheme seemed to give the page the final push.

The problem with drawing hard and fast conclusions is that we still don't know for sure what changes have been going on in Google while we were making our changes.

 

Hi All

My congratulations on a well run test, particularly during a period of significant upheaval with that MFSE (nice term Compar!).

I have only today found this post and spent three hours reading it from start to end - I would strongly recommend that anyone with an interest in SEO do the same.

This has only been succesful through strong leadership from a group prepared to pre-agree changes (thanks Compar, Foxy, Mcdar), a willingness to avoid panic changes, and... to my total amazement really good co-operation from members of this forum. My experience on other forums has been poor as a result of total unwillingness for members to cooperate.

Whilst there is a very welcome reluctance to draw conclusions at this point I would like to offer a few to see "if they fly":

1) Forum signature links do have an influence on SERPS
2) The coop ad network works a treat
3) the "sandbox" does not prevent pages from ranking highly
4) Exact KWP backlinks do not harm rankings
5) Links from unrelated sites help rankings
6) There is no penalty for exact KWP + exact <title>

oh.. and just for Compar:
7) Google is F**ked (well at least it behaves strangely at times)
