Interesting how folks will take the same information and come to different conclusions. Of course, my thoughts are derived mainly from work outside of this experiement, but I believe supported for the most part by this experiment ...

    1) Forum signature links do have an influence on SERPS
    Disagree.
Amazingly I now am in the camp that believes forum sig links do absolutely nothing for SERPs. They used to but something in the past 6 months has caused them to become worthless. I had a very hard time believing this one myself but have run several tests in several forum sites (vBulletin and phpbb) and looked at tests by other people and it appears to be the case.

    2) The coop ad network works a treat
    Strongly Agree

    3) the "sandbox" does not prevent pages from ranking highly
    N/A
I don't believe this experiment can be used to judge the existence of a sandbox. I believe a "sandbox" or filter can be triggered by over-use of backlinks too quickly from a small set of source class C IP's.

    4) Exact KWP backlinks do not harm rankings
Agree - with the caveat of possible sandbox/filter as noted above.

    5) Links from unrelated sites help rankings
    Strongly Agree

    6) There is no penalty for exact KWP + exact <title>
    Strongly Agree

    7) Google is F**ked (well at least it behaves strangely at times)
No Comment - We have enough threads on this nonsense IMHO

I am with you all the way on disagreeing on forum links

I have been saying this for a long while now - only use them for advertising (I don't even think they get new sites spidered any longer)

Thanks for your reply which has helped to clarify my thinking.

I thought that the evidence from this test suggested that the forum backlinks had a significant effect on the rankings of the test page! If backlinks from forums do not count do you agree with Leeds1 that the disqualification is simply based on whether "forum" is in the url?

However, it is the very nature of the "sandbox" that I find most intriguing and if anyone is "up for it" I would like to explore.

I have a very healthy respect and admiration for Google and find it difficult to believe that they would introduce, as many suggest, a filter that is purely time based. For me that simply doesn't add up (I do not rule out that it is true though!).

If it isn't time based (which needs to be proven!) then anyone with websites in the sandbox cannot simply "wait it out". I for one have websites that behave "normally" and websites that behave like they're sandboxed. From the testing I have done I would characterise a sandboxed website as follows:

    a) its pages respond to on-page SEO normally
    b) its pages respond to external in-bound links normally
    c) its pages do not respond to IBL/OBL normally

Anyone care to comment? Anyone care to join me in trying some experimentation to further our understanding of this phenomena?

    c) refers to links (inbound and outbound) from/to other pages on the website in question.

I always found that internal linking hardly helps for ranking in the first place. Same IP and same domain, too easy to whack a filter on. It's only important if you are in the business of spreading PR around and for getting indexed properly.

Not true TOPS30! I have many websites with thousands of pages ranking top solely as a result of internal back links. OK they are not highly competitive keywords but they generate a lot of traffic.

However, I don't want to get into an argument about this and would like to stay on topic - notably sandbox. In this regard and being very specific I will pick two of my websites:

    Site a) PR 5 and has been for a long while - ranks 1&2 for 100+ KWP's
Site b) PR5 but only recently - ranks outside page 1

I can move site a) down in the SERPS and then back to the top by changing internal linking text only - I cannot do so with site b).

Site b) exhibits many of the symptoms of an illness that people are currently calling sandbox.

Why? Don't know yet but it is possibly the sandbox (could be many other things though!). This is why I would like to join in a systematic test (as thorough as Compar, Mcdar, and Foxy have been) of this sandbox effect.

One way or the other I plan to find out what this "sandbox" is and how to get out of it. Having read this thread for 3 hours yesterday I am convinced that members here have the desire, determination, patience and capability to derive conclusive proof for certain aspects of googles behaviour.

I appear to have both types of websites (normal and sandboxed) and can therefore provide a test platform. I am looking for others to help guide testing and/or introduce their own sites to create statistical significance.

Patience - I think it is a good idea ... it has been tried before but thus far I don't think there has been any conclusive determination.

There was a recent thread on this ... search for the member Randfish and look at his posts and you'll find it.

I would suggest you start a new thread in the Google forum area for this discussion/experiment.

Thanks for your encouragement Nitin M

I agree that it warrants its own thread. I posted here because you guys have done such a great job with this thread I am hopeful that some of you would be willing to be involved in this new project (even if you have no sandboxed sites I would welcome your input on process).

I will wait for Compar, Foxy, and Mcdar (and anyone else who is still following this mammoth thread) to comment and if it seems there is a general positive attitude to the project than I shall open a thread.

I have a few ideas already on how to proceed and would like to get those ideas reviewed. It is clear that the scrutiny of methodology has contributed greatly to ensuring that this thread/test delivered useful and "trustable" results.

    Hi there good people,

I found this forum and stumbled on to this thread yesterday. What a journey, It has been a very interesting read, I was up half the night reading through from start to finish, phew. Actually I'm quite glad I stumbled on it now and didn't have to look in each day for an update, don't know if I would have followed it through. What helped is that right at the start I did a google search for sleeping bags and saw the page was number two. So during the dark days I had to keep reading to find out what pulled it back into line.

Couple of points, I have been a regular at a share trading forum for a few years now and have noticed when a thread gets rather longish it can suddenly disappear, we usually start a part 2 etc after about 10 pages because of this. I only mention this as I would hate to see this informative thread disappear into cyber space.

I think the experiment to a degree lost some relevance when the coop ad links were added, they achieved the aim of driving sleeping bag to the number two position and maybe even number one but my gripe is that not everyone can do that. We don't have access to that kind of firepower.
I was screaming out don't do it as I read through the posts.
It got to position 12 with a method anyone could use, I would have liked to see it pull itself out of the mire continuing in that tradition.

By the way, what has become of the Poker experiment, I thought that it was an excellent idea although I can think of some barriers that would have to be overcome.
I notice the site is still a demo.

I might add I am a complete novice at this so forgive me if my comments are naive.

    Michael.

    Cyclops,

I think everything you said is very germane. It is true that it seems the coop ads were the final push. And it is true that not all web site have access to this methodology.

So if we hadn't used the coop ads whatelse would we have needed to do?

    >>>So if we hadn't used the coop ads what else would we have needed to do?<<<

My view was that the experiment was about achieving a top 5 ranking using tools that are available to the average person. Asking for Links to be donated was imho skiting around the edge but I would have let that slide as it appears more could have been found by other means anyway but due to time constraints and keeping things moving along a nudge was necessary.

But using the coop links was overkill, at the time the ranking was improving and all the donated links hadn't kicked in yet. I just think a little more patience was called for, after all the experiment had come this far and the finish line was in sight.....it just looked to me that it was a case of, lets get this over and done with in the quickest manner possible.
In my mind this was the most important period, finding out how to get those final few precious places into the top 5 by means that the average Joe could use.

It is an excellent example of the results that can be achieved when members of a forum get together and work through a problem as you guys have done. I congratulate all involved for that. It is very rare that this happens, usually squabbling or lack of interest and the whole thing drifts to an end prematurly.

In the sharetrading Forum I belong to we have had excellent results when we got together as a group and researched a stock.

I'm not sure I agree with you on this, but it is a view that has merit. The "push" to achieve results came from the need to determine whether or not the spread of domains was more important than other factors and the embracing of the coop was a further extension of that. Admittedly we have no way of monitoring the numbers using this method but we have assumed, correctly, that this will be widely spread and as such has proved one or two invaluable points. The follow on in the future when we start dismantling bits is when we can see the other factors, as McDar pointed out, that may or may not have come to bear weight in the meantime.
