What has caused the big drop?

 

It could just be the flux in the SERP's...

Perhaps - but they were taken off ages ago weren't they.
Also, McDar now has the link back in his sig...

I'm a little confused at the moment as I'm not 100% sure what's happening with everything...

Regarding the link to the page in my signature...

I did not remove it in June nor this last time.

This is due to the fact that I cannot alter my Sig file without removing most of what I have there - so I chose to leave it "as is".

ALSO...

Throughout the course of this experiment, if I see a significant change in the pages position, I check this and other forums as well as Rank Pulse to see if our change coincides with any other major movement in Google. (You will see links to such forum discussions in the Complete Report linked to above).

I have NOT found any such reports this morning.

So do you think that the drop is as a direct result of the signatures being removed then?

It certianly looks that way.

 

It certainly does look like this was the result of the sig link change.

The page as been "stable" in the serps for a while now so it dosn't appear that the change was just "normal flux".

I would like to see what happens over the course of the next few days to a week before we try to draw some conclusion.

We should expect that IF there is a change due to the removal of the Sig Links that the page will stabilize at some new lower position i.e. - where it is now or worse.

If this turns out to be the case I certainly will be one eating humble pie, as it will prove counter to that which I have seen on my own sites and which may be proven here to have been from other factors or that Google was pissing around with these links over this period of time. I'm going to put back the famous weber bbqs and will do a comparison.

 

If this can be proven to be wholly the result of removing the signature links then what conclusions can we draw?

We appear to be talking about a large quantity of links from just 2 domains!

Do you think it's going to slip again (3DC's reporting #11)

No, most datacenters are still at #10 BUT 3 datcenters showing placement at #11 is not a good sign.

It does look like it may slide off of the first page of the results.

It will be evidence that Signature Links are effective and can be an asset to an overall linking strategy.

They probably would NOT be effective as the sole source or primary source of your links, however.

I would like to add here that over the course of this experiment I do think we have proven that

- Links from sites with different "themes" ARE effective. (the experiment page has 99% of it's links coming from sites that are not the same theme)

-- I have never been convinced that Google considers themes when it comes to Backlinks

- Unvaried anchor text is not penalized by Google. (the experiment page has 100% of it's anchor text exactly the same)

No, the links have not gone back up yet - it is much too early for such a move.

We have yet to determine if we have seen the full effect of their removal.

We need to wait and see what position the page will stabilize at before we make any other changes.

 

I'm still having a problem ascribing this current drop to the removal of the sig links. Do you really think Google would have devalued the page while still essentailly reporting the original number of links in their index?

I personaly don't think they even know the sig links have been removed yet. On an allied subject think about Shawn's Coop Network which appears to be so successful. Ever link the network puts up is immediately withdrawn on the next refresh of the page, but Google is reporting many of them as backlinks. So it is my conclusion that Google is much slower detecting and reacting to links that are taken down than they are to finding and indexing new links.

Now maybe that isn't entirely true either. We know they find new links quickly but the sandbox effect is all about the time it takes for them to promote the site based on links. So maybe we have a sandbox effect with removed links also.

But until I see the links disappear from their index I'll have a problem believing that their removal has had any effect at all.
