Using the "link:" search is not at all accurate as those totals only change when Google does it's much anticipated Backlink Update.

Nitin has not responded. His main site seems to be MIA right now and I found some forum discussion to indicate that it has been that way since at least the beginning of Dec. if not prior to that.

I would imagine that links to this experiment are not a priority in his life right now. If his involvement in the Ad co-op was connected to his main site, the links are undoubtably, gone now.

This is very unfortunate. Since Google was looking a little more stable these days, I thought we would finally have a chance at making a single change in this experiment that just might be isolated and evaluated without other uncontrollable factors obscurring the results.

We now have to "Assume" (not good for analysis) that both the sig links AND the Co-op links were removed at about the same time.

IMPORTANT - For any of those who have been following this experiment!

- One thing that has been "proven" over the last 8 months is the fact that ANY ATTEMPT TO EXPERIMENT with Google can never be totally controlled.

Therefore - ANY RESULTS and or conclusions drawn should be scrutinized be the readers. Many uncontrolled for and or unreported factors behind the scenes could also be the cause of the results NOT just what the experimenters were attempting to measure.

IF you have not noticed or have not checked it out prior to this, you may want to to take the time to look over the Complete Report that is also linked to in the daily Update to this experiment.

You will notice as you scan the daily "position" results, that there are several hyperlinks where significant changes have occured. Those links are there so ANYONE can go to forum discussions that were occurring on the same day indicating some major "event" going on with Google.

This is my attempt to be completely honest with the results of what we have witnessed in this experiment.

Without this "additional" information, we could have made some pretty bold assertions with our findings. Although, the assertions would have been TRUE, they would not have been entirely accurate.

Is there any way of confirming that the page is in/out of rotation on the coop network as this is a vital piece of info.

Does anyone following this thread know Shawn well enough to ask him?

 

I've checked a few of the ad_network_ads.txt and I would say that almost certainly the "sleeping bags" links are not being displayed on the coop network at the moment.

 

Yes, I agree. From time to time there seems to be evidence that Google is using some thematic evaluation in regards to links, and then you look at this experiment where I would hasten to say that probably not one single link is on a thematically related page, and the page is ranked in the top ten.

In any case never turn down a link. It may not do you a lot of good, but I don't think any link can ever hurt you.

 

I'll bet you never thought you would see me saying this Bob, but I totally agree!

On another note but leading on from this - if the ads have been withdrawn from the network [as for seeing them, that is a bit like catch the greasy pig] then one would normally expect the page to drop to where it was before they went. This has not happened - but at the 'same' time the number of links from the donators has increased [almost doubled] from 420 to 797.

Perhaps this is an indication of the spread/quantity argument?

Well I didn't remember it that way, which is why I posted the above - so I went back and looked, and here is the grab from the day we hit #2 because of the coops influence - and it was how I remembered it:

 

Foxy, I think you and McDar are both right.

Caryl is saying that prior to the coop ads, 10/12/2004, the page was at #11. And assuming the coop ads have been removed we have returned to approximately the same ranking.

I think you are saying that it took approx. 2 weeks for the coop ads to push the page higher and that that first happened on 10/27/2004. And I'm sure you agree that the lose of coop ads is the most probably cause for the drop of the page to its current position in the SERPs.

So what is the conflict between the two positions?

So, what the heck is up with Google? Is this part of the "new Google" rhythm?

When the sig links were removed in June, it took 14 days for the search to go from 403o to 197.

It has now been nearly a month since Bob and Foxy have, once again, removed the same links and we are lingering in some sort of "limbo" with most of the long gone links still being reported.

This certainly indicates some kind of change. It is a real shame that we have no way to do a similar search for the Ad network links. If we did, would they still be showing?

Afterall, many of us here now agree that the recent drop the experiment page took was most likely due to the loss of the network links.

This would be interesting data to have - DAMN!

Edited to add:

I just did a little "spot checking" on the links returned on the Link:www... search for the experiment page. I used a number of the "chatabout..." sites reported in that search and did a Site:www. chatabout...com +"sleeping bags" on them and found no incidences where pages were being returned due to a link to the experiment page. REMEMBER this was just a spot check. I only did it with a few sites. BUT when I did the same search on this forum, the results returned MANY pages where sleeping bags was found only in Bob's of Foxy's signature.

I guess that by now we can be pretty certain that the page is out of rotation in the ad network.

Partly in order to test this for myself and partly to test the same IP link myth? I would like to donate a link to this page from > 100 domains on the same IP address.

Would you be interested at this point? Are you planning any other changes that would invalidate this test?
