McDar Experiment

I have a number of sites and their recent behaviour in google ranges from superb to dropped from rankings to dropped from index altogether.

Some run coop ads, some don't. Some benefit from coop ads, some don't. So far there is no correlation to why they rank (or not!) the way they do.

IMO its way too early to even think about trying to reach any conclusions.

PS Of the 116 links I have donated to the project 11 are now indexed. Whether we will still be able to determine the effect of these links during the current madness is another matter altogether.

 

I've been pulling my hair out with new servers and FINALLY getting the Tools back up and running (they are currently up NOW) - we'll see how long they last his time...

BUT, I have noticed that the experiment page has been bouncing around on some datacenters as high as 23 and occasionally beyond that but I did not think to keep searching till I found where it was being reported.

Usually, if I refreshed the search, it would show up again.

What the F@#K are they doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patient is now reporting updates of these links to me daily.

ALSO:

Going over the Complete Report it is easy to see that Google was fairly "STABLE" from October 21st until December 18th. (as far as the Experiment page was concerned anyway!)

On December 19th I started to see larger discrepancies between the datacenters.

Today 6 Datacenters reported the page at #9 and 3 Datacenters reported the page at #22.

What I found notable was that in at least one case (I did not track all of them) -

The initial return from the search in Google (datacenter 64.233.161.99) the Experiment Page WAS NOWHERE i.e. MISSING in the 790 results Google returned!

Upon refresh - the page appeared at position #22.

Clearly - Google is having some kind of problem at this time on at least a few datacenters.

 

Although no company is perfect and mistakes are made I am of the opinion that for 99% of the time G shows us results from a fully working SE.

However, I doubt that even G can fully predict the impact of even minor changes across such a large and diverse results set. At present it would appear we are going through major changes - much less predictable.

 

Sorry, Patient, I do NOT share your confidence in programming or programmers.

Having worked with software programmers for a number of years and programming some myself, I know there are many things that can cause code to malfunction.

I am nearly bald today due to my recent struggle with most of the McDar Tools malfunctioning which all started when the programs were migrated to new servers with updated operating systems.

The problems ran from oversights in new operating system settings being correct to the old code NOT being completely compatible with the new version of the new operating system.

As far as the programmers went - their favorite mantra seemed to be " All software has bugs - we'll catch it/ fix it in the next update". This was said even when it involved somewhat major malfunctions.

Programmers don't neccessrily USE any of the programs they write.

Google SEEMS to be stabilizing again - no results for page at position #22 and all datacenters are now back to reporting allinanchor at #2.

Anybody else notice datacenters getting back to normal?

Yes, one of my sites that was hit the hardest had a couple of it's keywords restored to their normal position yesterdday. But other are still wildly out of their original place.

 

Nothing stable for me yet. I really wonder things will get to a point where I can figure out what to do next.

I know I'm coming in here late in the game, but why not do the following:

and change the title from "Sleeping Bags - McDar OutDoor Gear" to "Sleeping Bags"

As we come to the end of the calendar year I'm interested in seeing if some simple points can be made about the experiment. In line with that it would be helpful to identify significant serps and allinanchor changes over time with changes in backlinks. I believe over the holiday period I may be able to summarize.

The experiment started with a simple question about the relationship within McDar's tool that created a graph showing two points that were of interest (among other columns in the graph) google ranking and allinanchor ranking.

One thing we have seen is that lots of backlinks, with specific anchor text for "sleeping bags" has moved the site up in the rankings in general. (Beyond that IMHO the rest is open to discussion) There have been periods, during which rankings tanked, even as allinanchor ratings have generally stayed high. Different combinations of backlinks have had different effects over time. Diversity of backlinks seemed to have helped the site. The coop inclusion seemed to have helped.

During the period there has not been an ongoing measurement of competitors. That would be dramatically interesting. It would be interesting if other things were tried; ie diluting the anchor text in various ways or other aspects.

Having said all this it is afterall McDar's site and Caryl should look hard at this especially with only several months to go before heavy camping equipment purchasing begins to take off.

Just wondering where all this is going?

Two interesting suggestions. I wonder exactly what your rationale is?

On the first one I assume you that the number of levels below root is significant??? Have you tried this before and do you have any evidence?

On the second suggestion do you really think the inclusion of "-- McDar Outdoor Gear" delutes the importances and significance of "Sleeping Bags"????

Welcome!

Not knowing how much of this "epic thread" you have read, I'll attempt to give you a little background. Please forgive me if I am stating the obvious.

A year and three months ago, the main index page for my website ranked #23 for the search "sleeping bags" - not great, but not bad. On or about November 17th 2003 Google made a sigificant change to their search engine which came to be known as the "FLORIDA Update" or just Florida for short.

When this happened, the positioning of nearly ALL websites were grossly effected. Many sites even ones that had been on page one for ages - disappeared from the results completely or found themselves buried so deep they could not be found!

Needless to say, SEO forums developed huge threads as folks tried to figure out what had happened and what could they do about it.

It was at this point that it was discovered that "On-Page" optimization took a back seat to LINKING. A difficult problem also was that Florida was NOT just one single event or change. It was simply the beginning of what has turned out to be, MANY changes that Google was to undertake.

This Experiment started around the fourth month into these changes and several changes have taken place during the course of this experiment.

When it was determined that Linking was now King, How to Link became the focus. People started to agressively campaign for new links to their sites. This helped but did not help neccessarily for all keywords as the links were generic in nature and mostly just pointed to the main page.

Many sites on the internet Have a combination of topics or products to promote and it became apparent that there was a need to have links to deeper topic or product specific pages in the website, not just the main page. It was discovered that links seemed to be valued differently and that PR and anchortext were playing a significant roll.

It was at this time I developed this tool for myself - the Keyword Analysis Tool (link in my sig below) to help me evaluate my competition easier. I was STUNNED when I saw the results search after search show ALLINANCHOR and the regular results almost identical position for position. So , I decided that maybe my little tool would be of some help to others and I shared it with the public. Bob found it soon after that.

All that being said...

If you use the tool to do a search then pass your mouse over the urls of the sites returned, you will find that quite often, if not most often, the pages you are competing with are NOT main pages in a site. They are pages sometime deep within a site.

In fact, it has been well documented that links with anchortext will bring up pages where the keyword in nowhere to be found on the page or the website. This came to be known as "Google Bombing" and the best know example of this is the seach for "miserable failure" returning the Biography of George W Bush at whitehouse.gov. Obviously, the keywords are NOT found in any form on the page or the site.

So, in short - the page title nor the url were not an oversite on our part. It was just the result of the common knowledge at the beginning of the experiment that anchortext eliminated the need for it.

Not varying the anchortext was intentional as well. In fact, we have been adamant that it all be EXACTLY the same. It was the intent to "prove or disprove" the theory that "Google would penalize for the use of unvaried or un-natural use of anchortext in linking".

PS in the Daily Update - the Position reported in red is the predominamt position held. All datacenters are monitored every day and you will see that I report ALL of the positions returned that day in the brackets just after the date.

On any given search at www.google.com, Google accesses one of the many datacenters for the results returned.

I agree, However it is obvious that such summaries MUST also be recorded on a webpage and linked to in the Daily Update as well as the Complete report.

As these are very time consumming to compose and become buried in the thread quickly.

So, anyone wishing to comment on this Experiment or interpret it in any way, I will collect all of your input and add it to the "Summary Report".

Please remember that this experiment has been performed in full public view so that it would be transparent and open to everyone who cared to follow it. I believe it has revealed some things over it's course, that it was not intended for such as the several "tweeks" Google has made over the last 8 mos.

To summarize this 8 months of data will prove to be a difficult task and any and all input and prospective will be welcome.

As well as researching all of the data every day, I have also noted everyday how many "views" the thread was getting. Afterall, if no one was interested, there would be no need to continue..."

This thread gets more than 100 views most days so I know there are a number of folks who follow it daily. It would be interesting to know what people have gotten out of this. This input is valuable as well because sometimes you get so close to something that perspective becomes narrow and even distorted.

Merry Xmas Caryl and Bob - have a good one will see you in the New Year as although I am on the net I am only on dial-up so I won't be doing a lot - anyhows its been fun working with you guys this year.
