Thanks for the clarification. I have always doubted that Google really looks at the entire C-block. I do a lot of linking and cross linking from a single C-block on my server, to sites we have designed and host, and I have always thought those link were very effective.

For instance -- and this is related to Smryl's post -- I add a link to all new sites we host, to a list on my company page entitled "sites we host". I never submit to SEs. But this link will usually get the new site crawled and indexed within a very few days.

I think your experience certainly weighs in on the side that signature links do contribute to search engine placement!

What seems to be a "new" Google phenomenon is they are not updating their cached files. Oh, they may be adding to them on a daily basis BUT they are most certainly NOT purging them on a timely basis.

As I was snooping around Google pages today I found this statement on their site to be interesting...

Now, this may have been there forever, but since Google seems to be changing or having some problems with caching I would say that we should monitor Google carefully with regard to how current our pages in Google are!

Remember that the experimental page started dropping in the serps in late June til it finally was GONE July 31 thru August 20. (see Complete Report)

It was quite by accident that I discovered that the cache for the page had not been updated since mid June! Once I updated the time stamp on the page, Google updated the cache of the page and we popped back up from nowhere into position #48 then the following day position #22.

We might ride the benefit of Bob's and Foxy's sig links for a good long while or at least until Google purges the cache for those pages from it's index.

Again, this lack of "purging" seems to be "new" because the last time the sig links were dropped Google searches revealed them gone within 14 days. It has now been 42 days since they were removed this last time.

I haven't said anything to anybody yet but I also noticed that. I added some new pages to the InfoPool several days ago and Google has not cached them yet. They use to crawl and cache all my InfoPool stuff every 48 to 72 hours. Now it has been 5 or 6 days and no sign of them indexing these new pages.

But I hasten to say Google isn't broken. They are just perfect.

Hi - I have been off with dial -up connections so I haven't been able to do the update with the links but I have sort of kept in touch with the posts and I think that Bob [once again] is hitting close at the truth.

Consider this:

from the 26 - 29/11 there was an increase in the back links from 420 to 710 ie +290
from the 29 - 10/12 there was an increase in the back links from 710 to 797 ie +87
from the 10 - 20/12 there was an increase in the back links from 797 to 924 ie +227

And now there has been a large upswing in the back links in the last few days covering the period that there has been a significant movement upwards in the SERPs - sods law that I haven't been able to track them daily.

from the 20 - 29/12 there was an increase in the back links from 924 to 1634 ie +710

 

We are getting things a bit muddled here...

On 6/26/2004 the page dropped from #43 to #144
On 7/06/2004 the page dropped from #125 to #172
On 7/18/2004 the page dropped from #169 to #311
On 7/31/2004 the page dropped from #315 to NOT FOUND
On 8/21/2004 the page jumped from NOT FOUND to #48
On 8/22/2004 the page jumped from #48 to #22

In the Complete Report you will find at least 7 hyperlinks that go to discussions on SEO Forum threads that are focused on Google issues. The link on 8/21/2004 leads to this thread where it was pointed out that the page cache had not been updated by google since early June and that once the cache in Google was updated we quickly came back from nowhere to position #22.

8/22/2004 we were at position #22.

8/18/2004 Supporters started to add links from different IP Addresses.
9/11/2004 Google Backlink Update showed several of the newly added backlinks to the page.

9/11/2004 we were at position #17
9/18/2004 we were at position #18 (Supporters links were at 192)

PERSPECTIVE:

In last 13 days we climbed 2 positions in Google and added 903 links.

Note: of the 903 new links 663 came from one IP address (Foxy's)

It is of my opinion that Google is NOT given much credit to ANY of the new links in recent days!

- Believe it or not - it has taken me nearly three hours of pouring over the data to compile this post!

That I can well believe - 3 hours!!!

What is significant is that a 2 place movement is 20%

What we do know is that during this period there has been a significant increase in the links from the original group

What we do not know is whether it is the quantity [ie my increase] or the spread from the new 100 [as we have no up to date reports].

However what I am now speculating is this:

Consider the hyperbolic curve with the x-axis as the spread and the y-axis as the quantity and the curve is the "limit" of effect

If there was a huge initial quantity there would be little effect on the Serps
If the spread was small the same would apply
As the spread gets larger so the quantity would be able to come into effect

This would fall into line with that which Bob was talking about

The threshold being the curve.

Label me totally in DENILE! As I am not ready to accept such a complicated concept at this time.

There is evidence in other threads that Google is doing strange things right now and it is my belief that Google is NOT handling or evaluating current records as it should.

This is why I feel that the pages current position is not being appropriately calculated.

Another bit of evidence I have collected this morning (I've been a busy little bee) is something I happen to notice as I was working on the tools this past week or so.

I check the results for this experiment approximately the same time every day, around 7:30 to 8:AM EST. (even though I don't always get around to updating this thread sometimes until later).

I happen to notice on several different occassions (when working on the tools) that the experiment page was coming up in MUCH higher positions on some datacenters i.e. position #19 or #22. I would think to myself, well here we go - we're going to start dropping. BUT, the next AM, the page would be right back to where it was.

As the result of comments in the Shakin’ Em Up thread on this forum, I decided to chart this today to see what was going on.

Indeed, when I checked back at noon today 5 datacenters had the experiment page at position #20 - up from position #8 at 8:AM. This "flip flopping" has been going on for days now! Occasionally when I would be gathering info from the datacenters in the morning, some datacenters would drop the page entirely and it was not returned AT ALL in the results. If I just did a subsequent search we'd pop back up again.

Google is indeed screwing up!

This is why I am so hesitant to entertain or speculate on our position and links right now.

Google started a PR AND Backlink update this morning!!!!

So far, it looks like the page will go from 154 Backlinks to 264 Backlinks.

Changes can be seen on only two datacenters right now and as I look through them I see 16 of Patient's "new" links showing up.

I'll do an official count of Backlinks once this update starts to spread across datacenters and we are fairly certain it will "stick".

I show my site going from a PR2 to a PR4 on all but two of the servers.
IBLs go from 401 to 893

Hi Jay, Welcome!!!!

It is not a matter of being accurate. The results ARE Googles!

Google presents it's results on any one of a total of 27 different Datacenters (the total has been as high as 60) right now. The "Datacenters" are found at the 27 IP addresses you see in the Datacenter Quick Check table first column.

To see what I am saying, copy any of the numbers you see (ex. 216.239.53.99) and open a new browser window. Instead of typing in http://www.google.com into the address line, just paste that IP address you just copied and hit enter on your keyboard.

You'll see that a Google window opens up.

All you did when you entered the IP address in the address line was to specify which Google datacenter you would be querying rather than www.google.com command sending you to a random one.

So, you see, the results ARE Google's own and are as "real" as Google gets.
