I know what you mean Dave! There certainly a massive amount of data there.

I believe the one major fact that can be derived easily from the 9 months of data is that analyzing Google is like trying to pinpoint the "location" of a moving target!!!!

Google makes an obvious change. The evidence is that a great many sites have been effected. By the time we can figure out just what might have changed and start modifying link strategies to compensate for it - Google has evolved a few steps further.

I use the word "EVOLVED" specifically because that is what our data indicates. Small but nearly constant changes commonly referred to as "tweeks".

These changes have NOT all been to Googles algorithums though. Many have been to what they display as results to searches.

For instance... One updated reported 3530 Backlinks to this page. The next Update droppped the the reported Backlinks to 155.

We know in reality that our Backlinks had remained nearly the same through both these updates. PLUS our position in the serps also remained stable. So it was obvious that what really changed was what Google CHOSE to report as Backlinks and NOT what it was really using to calculate serp placement.

Again I don't think I can stress this enough...
Be cautious when reading theories and reports of "experiments". Most of these do NOT have enough hard evidence to support them. You will recognize this when you read that they made some modification and got this result. (period). There are too many other UNCONTROLABLE factors that MUST be considered. A move in the serps could just as well be CAUSED by others doing something or Google making an adjustment (or having problems) as it can because of the changes you just made.

I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think any of us, who have been here from the beginning, ever imagined we would be still doing this 9 mos later. We probably thought like most people that we would be able to draw some quick conclusions after a few days/weeks.

...SEO is kinda like being a weatherman. All of your current data indicates that it will be a "Sunny Day" tomorrow - then that damn Butterfly flaps it's wings in China (referrence to Chaos Theory)and changes everything...

It would appear that the page may have stabilised at #5 - or is this too early to be sure?

To me this experiment feels like its lost its way a bit now (no-ones fault just a result of changes beyond everyones control). Anyone care to expound on what we are now trying to prove and suggest any next steps that we might take?

Actually, it is too early to say if page has stabilized. As we have just experienced a Google Update that took 6 days to complete and ususally during an update serps are kinda in a "holding" patern.

In fact, this mornings results show things moving again!

Note that the experiment page is now Position #6 on 18 Datacenters but #7 on 2 Datacenters and #10 on 6 Datacenters.

Something is going on with Google that seems to cause serps to change throughout the day. I have been doing my best to try and record where the experiment page is at different times during the day - just to gather clues as to what might be happening.

You can view the Data on this table - Data Fluctuations

Not sure why you think we have lost our way.

The latest change we have added was your contribution. We are attempting to test to see if 116 links from different urls all residing on the same C-Block would have a significant impact on our placement.

As of yet you have reported that Google has detected 115 of the 116. The last Backlink Update reported 16 of those. Again, the last 6 days of Update has to be treated almost as non-days and since today's results are showing some movement - we still should sit tight.

ALSO - We are still keeping an eye on Bob's and Foxy's sig links as Google is still reporting them. As long as Google still has these pages cached, we have no idea whether they are being included in calculating our placement in the serps.

Yes, this is kind of like watching grass grow but if you really want to learn about Google one really has to be willing to be "Patient" ( ).

Actually, Foxy the Chaos Theory is a real recognized Theory!

(Off topic - a real life event that happened in "my neck of the woods" that is an excellent example of how remote events can have even devistating effects half way around the world and months into the future! Read the last paragraph at bottom of page. Keep in mind -Summer here is temperatures from 70's to high 90's F)

I referrenced that theory because any page/site could experience changes due to something happening to site remotely linked.

In our case, we had Nitins Co-op links and had no idea that they were gone!
But just think if those links had elevated the page to a PR7 and then all of the supporters pages that we link to were elevated in PR as a result and then they pass on PR value to other pages they link to etc. -on and on-

Nitin had server problems that brought his sites down for an extended period of time (weeks). He is still working hard to get thing going again.

My point was referring to the Domino effect that such an event could cause and that sites far removed from this would have NO IDEA what had happened to cause changes to their PR or possible ranking.

The rise and fall of Link Farms in the Spring of 2004 had far reaching effects like this.

It is these unknowns that can run "interference" when trying to determine cause and effect while experimenting on Google.

I just was looking through other threads in this forum and saw the one regarding "Google Indexing".

In light of today's "slip in the serps - I thought I should check to see what the cached date was on the experiment page.

Today Google is using a cached page dated Nov. 18th, 2004!!!

I have been keeping an eye on the cached date (occasionally) as we had experienced that huge lapse in updating last Summer. When I checked a few days ago, the cached date was "late" December!!!!

So, Google, what the hell are you doing now!!!

I guess it is just one more thing I will have to keep much closer track of BUT this may explain today's serp results.

Caryl, i do recognise the chaos theory, it is my sense of humour that was talking about the pigs flying - just spreading muck around on an ever increasing scale!

Links and serps - the slip in the position just could be attributed directly to the drop in links on the donator pages.

As the serps seem to lag by 4 days other indicators this would be directly attributable to the drop on the 2nd from 1834 to 1626

So we should expect further drops as the links show a position now of 1508

I figured you must have been aware of that theory as you are much more adept at math than myself! I just thought some might have taken it as a joke when you mentioned the "pigs flying" thing.

We ARE dropping in the serps BUT something seems to be going on with GOOGLE right now!!!

Hi all,

I have spent the entire weekend performing an extensive link analysis on the links returned to the experimental page by Googles current link: search

I also evaluated the links for the Top Ten sites returned for our keywords on Google.

I have reported for each site in the Top Ten the...

• Total number of links returned
• Total number of Domains those links originate from
• Total number of IP Addreses those Domains originate from

I have included a table with a breakdown of all of the sites Google currently reports pointing to the experimental page as of this last Backlink Update.

This was an attempt to see if there was any indication or pattern apparent in Googles results that would lend any evidence to the types of links Google gave weight to most.

As you will see by the tables I have compiled, Googles link: command search results have been rendered virtually useless!

I had added the Yahoo Linkdomain: search to the Keyword Analysis Tool just to give some idea of the total links reported to competitor's sites. But, as Yahoo does NOT allow a link search to one particular page on a site, we are still left with no way of really knowing just how many links or what kind of links our competitors have that help to place them where they are in the results.

I did find while doing all of this that we have had a misunderstanding with our current test. The new links added by Patient are NOT from 116 different IP Addresses all within the same C-Block. They are 116 different Domains residing on only a few different IP Addresses which are all on the same C-Block.

So, there appears to be no pattern at the page level for number of links (I am assuming that your analysis did not look at link text!).

It would be interesting to see if there is any pattern to link quantity at the domain level.

PS Still 115 indexed - 1 was down when gbot came by on Xmas eve!

On the contrary - there most likely is! Google is just NOT accurately reporting the links to a page! As we can see through this very experiment. Afterall - It is a particular "page" being returned in the serps NOT a website (Domain).

I am not sure what you are referring to when you mentioned "link text". If you are referring to "link text" as it pertains to Anchor Text - the allinanchor rating for the Top Ten pages returned is under the column with the heading *A*

The allinanchor rating remains the only value reported that somewhat groups the Top Ten sites.

Allinanchor ranking found in the Top Ten were...
1,2,5,6,7,8,9,11,13,17! (not in that order)

edited to add: I just ran the Keyword Analysis Tool (link in sig below)for today on this same search and there were some changes in positions and allinanchor rating. The Top Ten remainded the same sites.
The results were are follows: The number after the site is the allinachor rating.

The link quantity at the Doamin level is represented by in the column headed "Yahoo". Yahoo ONLY will return a search for linkdomain: (they do not offer a search were you can find links quantity to an individual page.

As you can see in the table, the range of number of links to the Domains listed in the Top Ten range from...

as little as 365 links for one Domain/Site ranked #7 on Google to another Yahoo reports 65,900 links to that Domain/Site ranked #8 on Google.

There certainly is no pattern there!

If I have mis-understood you questions - please clarify.

Well, we seem to be moving back to the number #5 position!

I had mentioned in a post on Jan 8th that I noticed that the cache of the page was November 18th. The odd thing about that was that previously the cache page shown was of a "late" December date.

What happened to Googles cache index?

I have been checking this on a regular basis as we also seemed to be slipping in the serps and I did NOT want to see a repeat of last summer.

Interestingly, yesterday the page was still showing a cache page of November 18th.

Today, the cache of the page is Jan 9th, 2005!

Again, here is the table I have been keeping since 12/31 of the position of the experiment page in the serps, on all Datacenters, at different times during the day.

Daily Fluctuations

During this first two weeks of the year there have also been numerous threads both here in this forum as well as at SEO Chat regarding big serp movement. Many reported that "sandboxed" pages/sites popped into great positions then slowly slipped (some leaped) back to oblivion.

Important to note is that during this time, NO NEW (unsandboxed) sites appeared in the Top Ten of our keyword search. The movement of our page was just a "reshuffling" of old familiar "Top Contenders" for the keyword.

It is "Google Events" such as this that make it very difficult to interpret experimental results.

When G decides to do this, we can only go to the sidelines and wait til it is over BEFORE we can resume.

NOTE: That throughout this time the "site:www.*" search on Google has seen little to no change. The cached pages of Bob's and Foxy's long ago deleted sig links have remained virtually unchanged.

As I have been monitoring all of this I read many posts where people where quick to run and make BIG changes to there sites!!!

I hope the information I have presented is evidence enough to show you that it is very important to go SLOWLY when making changes to your site. Check before, during, and after frequently for "Google Events".

Above all BE PATIENT!!

We could have easily mis-interpreted our drop to position #9 in the serps to the drop in links as reported by Foxy on a regular basis. (see Daily Update)

"This last 'ride' was totally on Googles dime" is my evaluation.
