Hi Caryl

We have a redirect in place but as the original links to the page have all gone I'm not sure the redirect will of great help.

It is a complex situation to work through as each links page is linked to by all pages on each site - and between the sites there are over 2.5 million pages so there will be a long queue of "old" urls in the spider queue - as well as an increasing number of new ones.

What G does in these circumstances is difficult to predict.

What I can say is that, other than a dip when our servers were being fine tuned and couldn't cope with the huge spike in traffic, our traffic has not gone down much - i.e. the rankings for our pages are still good.

As of today, referals from G are roughly 20% to new urls, 80% to old urls. Even though the old urls are redirected (301) we are still able to record referals.

Wow - thats a swift turnaround - any ideas why?

 

Well it really is NOT a swift turn around - yet! It only reflects a little change in a couple of datacenters.

If you look closer - remember that the position reported is the one represented on the most datacenters - yesterdays numbers were very close to todays.

I have been waiting for an excuse to go slightly off topic in this thread for awhile now.
I mentioned that I was having problems viewing this thread......it turns out that these problems only occur when using Firefox, everything is okay when using IE.

Actually it's not just this thread but other threads on Digital Point as well.

Yes, this is a very long thread indeed!

Cyclops - I use FireFox and I have not encountered any problems viewing this thread or others on this forum. The one big (annoying) difference I see though between FireFox and IE on this forum is that in FireFox there is a banner ad just after the first post listed on any given page I view. Do you have something set to block the banner ad or something?

I want to point out again...

The site that the experiment page is on was moved to NEW Hositng on January 21, 2005 which required DNS /nameserver change as well as new IP address!

The site was then moved AGAIN on January 27, 2005 to a different server which involved another IP address change!

I would not have predicted that this would effect Googles ability to access the page or cause any problems as far as Google is concerned...

BUT..

Anybody have expertise in this area?

BTW... in case you didn't catch it in the other thread.

I have added 6 New/Additional Datacenters to the Datacenter Quick Check tool today.

I just found these Datacenters on Sunday morning. I don't know if they were previously known about by others or if this is a "NEW" discovery BUT you can view them now on the tool listed above.

I will be working now to add them to the Google Datacenter Watch Tool next.

Edited to add: The Google Datacenter Watch Tool has now been updated to include the "New"/additional Datacenters.

Another question about Perfucked Google is the number of pages they report from my InfoPool. In reality the number is constantly growing. They have reported as high as 115, but now they are down to 91????????

Well, what can I say...

The bright side is that the page is not at position #151 on anydatacenters today

I just checked on the cache of the page on one of the datacenters where we were at #144 and a datacenter where we were on position #16 to see if there was any difference - there was NOT.

The cached page being returned by Google has a date of Jan 25, 2005.

BUT! - This was in the middle of the switch over of nameservers and IP address changes.

Ordinarily, this really should make no difference, but since this involved a shopping cart and database, I had made a change to the links from the sleeping bags on the page to point to the new IP address and not just www.mcdar.com. This kept people on the one database.
example:
http://70.84.24.227/camping1/images/26-003.jpg
instead of
http://www.mcdar.com/camping1/images/26-003.jpg

At a certain point the first link died as the IP is no longer valid.

Long story short, most of the links on that cached version of the page are NOW DEAD LINKS.

Of course all the links were changed back as soon as the change over was complete, but it was just very unfortunate that Google caught this page in the transition.

In an attempt to get Google to update the cache of the page, I updated the metatag I use to keep track of changes...
<meta name="Date" content="2/3/05">, saved, and uploaded to the server.

I will keep track of this to see if this change will help bring us "out of the ozone".
