Boy I wish I had been active recently. That is a wierd and scary drop. Personnally I hope that change is more a reflection of the server change and not google wide changes otherwise its welcome back Florida.

I thought of this thread and the keyword difficulty tool developed by Randfish recently. It frames keyword difficulty on a number of different measures for the top ten for a keyword phrase http://www.socengine.com/seo/tools/keyword-difficulty-results.php

If and when the site returns to a top 10 position it would be interesting to look at the site vis a vis other competitors in the context of this long term experiment that has focused on anchor text.

Now I know Google never makes mistakes, so where do you think those 25 pages went? Maybe I have a hole in my server and they just fell out. I'll have to go look on the floor and see if I can find them.

 

Well, don't get too fooled by the "drop" from 145 to 100...

Although position #100 was the predominant postion today - it was not by much! PLUS - Today none of the Datacenters had the page in a position below #100.

At least yesterday some of the Datacenters still reported the page at ~19

Also note that we are once again showing up on a couple of Datacenters as position #2 for allinanchor!

Make no mistake - There is a Google Event occurring right now! Appearing #14 on one Datacenter and appearing at the same time #452 on another is NOT due to plus or minus a few links anywhere - it is a Google thing.

We just have to hold tight.

I am seeing what sort of looks like the re-entry of Keyword Prominance into the algo though.

One site buried since late last spring (Position #546 to Not Found) is suddenly appearing at position #13 on 13 different Datacenters.

The particular site I am referring to was built as an affiliate site. It has little merit on it's own. It was optimized primarily for Keyword Prominance in on-page text, title, and url. ( It is #1 for allintitle, allintext, allinurl, and allinanchor - yet it remained not found if searching it title) It has few backlinks. Absolutely nothing has been done to it since last spring!

I'm doing my spot check on the Datacenters and as of 2M -

10 Datacenters have the experiment page at position #6

On these same Datacenters the allinanchor rating is back at #2

At 8:AM this morning - These very same Datacenters had the page at position #100 and allinanchor #28

As you can see from the table I have been keeping, Google is still far too unstable to make anything out of it, but I just had to note this here.

Datacenter Results February

I just checked the cache of the page on these Datacenters and it is the same Jan. 25th page with dead links! (I have thought that it was that cached page that may have been a problem- still have to keep a close eye on)

As many already know, last week I added a feature to the Keyword Analysis Tool (link below in signature) that allowed one to select any Datacenter they wished to Analyze their results on.

And seeing the results I reported above, I thought it would be interesting to run an analysis through 3 different Datacenters to see how the Top Ten Compared.

Here are the results comparing Datacenters 66.102.7.147, 216.239.57.147, and 64.233.171.147.

Note that the position for allinanchor changes for some of the other top ten as well.

Wild changes that the experiment page have had over the last few days...and the tremendous changes in the DC's can't have anything to do with the experiment. They must merely point to wild fluctuations in google. It would be interesting to find out about other sites...if they also had similar fluctuations. Whether Google is perfucked or has periodic deep illnesses it would be interesting to see how widespread this is.

I have read threads where folks are reporting seeing these changes. I just don't think there is anyone else out there (crazy like me) with this kind of detailed documentation.

I fail to see how sports mans guide can be in the top 10 at all of those datacenters yet Mcdar is in the 90ies. Although with 15000+ links and 52000 pages I suppose they could be on a charge.

Gorp away are overkill on the links and pages though.

I agree that you have a lot of detailed historical data. Question is whether any of us can make enough sense of it to be of any help in how we go about the development of our own sites.

The "Historical" data (past year) is only good in that it points out that what is happening currently has NOT happened, to this extent, in the last year. What is happening right now on Google IS truely an EVENT!

The "Historical" data, as a whole, documents many many changes in Google and cannot be analyzed as one piece with one result. Again, it would be like trying to pinpoint the exact location of a moving target. Google has quite simply made too many changes over the past year to make one single analysis.

When we started this experiment, I would never have imagined that Google would be constantly changing. This is why I have inserted hyperlinks in the Complete Report that link to major threads on different forums discussing the major changes as they occurred!

One of the great resources this experiment offers is extensive before, during, and after documentation. This allows for a much more effective means of at least attemping to analyse what Google is up to now.

I should add more but I have to run to an appointment.

If anyone would really like to discuss some of the results seen in this experiment but hesitates to post here, I do have a little forum I have just put up where a few of us are discussing things in greater detail - esp. this Google event!

I note the cached snapshot is now 7 Feb but the cache isn't that same page that I see when I browse there.

I note that you can get multiple different pages on the same url - is this new or has that always been the case?

 

Right now the difference between Datacenters seems to be equalizing.

However, the one thing I find important to point out is the changes occuring in regard to allinanchor ranking. I started another thread on this forum regerding allinanchor changes entitled ALLINANCHOR What the F...

During a big Google Update/Event we all tend to focus on Backlinks and serps and not even think to check on something like allinanchor position! Those responding to the thread reported similar experiences as we are seeing now with the experiment page.

I think this change in allinanchor is IMPORTANT to point out because it is unpresidented in the history of this experiment!

Even last summer when this page dropped from position #24 on June 6th to #46 June 12, to #144 June 25, to #172 July 6, to #311 July 18, to NOT FOUND July 30, allinanchor REMAINED at position #5 to #7.

On January 26, 2005 this page was sitting at position #5 and allinanchor #2.[solid across all DCs]
Then things started to slowly fall apart...
On January 27, 2005 this page was reported at position #13 and allinanchor #3. [some fluctuation in DCs but not unusual]

It remained at these positions until February 3 when this current "Upadate" Started. BUT allinanchor started changing across datacenters on February 1st.
On February 3rd the position reported dropped to #145 and allinanchor to #7.

Recently we were discussing the possiblity of loss of ranking on this page due to it's move to new servers, DNS Change, and IP address changes. Especially as Google cached the page at a window that soon left many dead links on the page. That page was cached on January 25th and remained cached until today.

Today's cache of the page is dated Feb 7th and all links working.

IF that cached page had anything to do with some of what we have witnessed over the past 10 days, one would think that we should see some indication soon.

CALL TO ACTION! - PLEASE check to see if you notice any unusual changes to allinanchor on the pages you are watching and report your findings on the thread I started (link above). PLEASE report there even if you see no change at all.

The only way we can figure out why allinanchor is changing for some is to compare those effected to those who may not have been effected to see what the differences are.
