 My oh my. The page seems to be creeping back up. Now the question is how did the site show for that allinanchor when no dcs showed it at that rank. Over the last 10 days allinanchor matched at least some of the dc's for that day.

BTW I started a thread at seo chat to see who else lost ground on allinanchor and if there is any consistancy to the experiences. So far no defining trends.

I know guys, it seems like there is little "like the sun pokes through the clouds" every once in a while.

It gives a little hope here. I have "caught" a few datacenters every now and then reporting allinanchor at position #2 and a few datacenters every now and then reporting our at position #6. (not at the same time mind you).

Case in point: I just did a quick spot check and Datacenters 64.233.183.99 and 64.233.183.104 are both reporting our regular position at #6 while allinanchor is #16 on both.
The last Datacenters to report allinanchor position as #2 were 66.102.11.104 and 66.102.11.99.

BUT, then again, Google has been dancing with itself and has Updated and then very shortly after that Rolled the Update on a few Datacenters. I have been able to "catch them in the act" with my frequent recordings.

As of now, 6 Datacenters stiil HAVE YET TO BE UPDATED! We are now into day 14 of this update with no end in sight.

I have looked in on other threads and many folks have moved on and assumed and are talking like the whole thing is over.

The fat lady has not yet started to sing!

GOOGLE IS HAVING PROBLEMS and I have the documented proof!

If folks choose to swallow other explanations regarding the current status of Googles search after you have seen this evidence... well...

Here, once again, are the links to the (now) two tables I have been updating several times a day.

    Google Update February 2005

    Feb Update by C-Block

(right now the data results from the tools is not organized by C-Block so it is quite difficult to record the results directly that way. I am currently trying to come up with a look up that will order by c-block)

Why does everyone insist on trying to make order out of chaos? From my point of view all Caryl's tracking of the data centers proves is that there is not any order or reason. That's why I quoted the number of pages reported from my site. If Google can't even get a simple count like this right on a consistent basis, how can anyone purport to make sense of the greater inconsistencies.

The thing we know about chaos is that there are no patterns. Google may start with "G" but they aren't God. To try and abscribe some overall intelligence or rationale to this current chaos is simply to ignore the obvious in my way of thinking. Google is going through some major internal turmoil. It can't possibly by concious design.

Google is dealing with millions of pages. To suppose that you can divine the master plan from the changes on even 10 or 20 pages, or sites, is ridiculous. In sampling terms the sample is so small as to be insignificant.

The only thing to do is wait and hope that these machinations settle down and some consistent patterns emerge.

    Absolutely, Bob!!

Humans, by nature, find it almost intolerable to just stand by, powerless to change an unwelcome circumstance in our lives.

"There has got to be something we can do..."

That is what makes us most vulnerable to the first ones coming by who claim to have "the answers". The ones who claim to have the solution. The ones who claim to have the cure.

Hold on tight and use this time to LEARN.

We can apply here what we have learned from this experiment. It's valuable knowledge to know that many times Google IS BROKEN! It's not always your problem.
It is just as likely to be Googles problem!!!

It doesn't hurt to try and come up with answers or suggestions as to what is happening and why it has happened. That seems to be a basic purpose of the forums. Regardless not everything is easy to describe.

Many years ago as a financial analyst for a subsidiary of a larger company I kept putting reports together as to why we were doing better or worse week after week. Couldn't explain it. My bosses couldn't explain it. We started to put the same reasons down for doing better or worse each week.

About 1/2 a year later the people from headquarters swept down and demanded to know what we were doing. We shrugged our shoulders and admitted we couldn't make heads or tails of weekly results. Ultimately they laughed and we agreed to look at things differently.

On the other hand we did come up with some analyses that helped in different areas. Constant effort at many points did come up with some better understanding that ultimately helped the company in a couple of ways.

I'm still astonished at the big dip and upheaval with allinanchor. This experiment started out as an effort to get a grasp of allinanchor and rankings.

With all the changes in google over the year the experiment page never had its allinanchor juggled around as in the past few days. Why? Its not too early to begin to look at that.

Could be a loss of links or a loss of reported links. Could be other reasons. Google could be reevaluating allinanchor or making it undecipherable and not relevant to rankings just as it did with reported backlinks and PR updates earlier.

I'm one of those people that like to come to quick decisions. Frankly, with having not seen better reasons been thrown around during the last 2 weeks I'm still of the opinion that this latest set of changes has something to do with focus of keywords, on-page optimization and focus of backlinks.

If only because few IF ANY bls came from pages with no relevance to sleeping bags that could be a reason for the experiment page to have dropped and it could be a reason for devaluing the anchor text.

    Dave,

I am really starting to believe that you are actually eager for this experiment to "land" in a much worst position post Feb 3rd than pre Feb 3rd just so there will be some support for the theming theory.

Because up until then the experiment page seemed to fly in the face of that theory.

Your statement (I put in italics above) puzzles me

Did we not and aren't we still seeing dramtic and erratic changes in Google?

Look at this evenings results -

    Google Update February 2005

    Feb Update by C-Block

Why is it so unacceptable to consider that the rediculous results that we are STILL seeing are Googles problems and NOT ours?

This evenings 5:30PM results had the page at...

    5 Datacenters - Position #80
    9 Datacenters - Position #81
    12 Datacenters - Position #82
All those datacenters were reporting allinanchor at #26 or #27

BUT - At that same time...
7 Datacenters were reporting the experiment page at position #49 with allinanchor at position #45

What the hell is up with that?

Am I the only one here that thinks that trying to analysize these kind of results is like trying to psycho analyze a drunken sailor, while he is still drunk!

    Caryl:

I think each recent commentor is focused on different elements of the past 2 plus weeks. By example you have vigorously followed the topsy turvy flip flopping nature of the data centers, Bob has commented upon the loss of links, and I tend to focus on the drop in allinanchor. Even as allinanchor and ranking are dancing like crazy, to date the page's allinanchor never dropped like this, while at times serps ranking did drop.

The allinanchor drop stunned me in part because all this year I have had great success with backlinks with targeted anchor text that have improved my sites ranking for a variety of keyword phrases. I've been a big believer in its effectiveness throughout 2004. I've recently noted some changes in serps for various sites and keywords that suggest that volume linking may not be as effective as during 2004. So I'm focused on it.

Who knows why the rankings have changed dramatically besides the engineers inside google. Maybe they don't know. Anyways I'm just focused on the allinanchor part of the story. I follow this vigorously since it is a one-of-kind public experiment that is extraordinarily revealing.

Actually I'd rather see this site zoom to the top. As I mentioned (I think in a PM) I was an avid camper and with all the help you have given everyone with your tools I'd rather the site fly to the top. I also love to get to a quick answer...even if there are no answers at this time.

    Dave,

Allinanchor has me perplexed as well. Afterall, it has been unpresidented (at least in all of the results that I have recorded) in the history of this experiment. This is the very reason I started to document the allinanchor results along with the pages position in the table/s I have been keeping.

As I have stated previously, most people do NOT keep track of allinachor ratings all that diligently, so there is very little input on the subject. This makes it extremely difficult to discuss or evaluate.

I was speaking with someone yesterday and one thing lead to another and come to find out, he too experienced problems last July/August with Google messing up with caching the pages of his site!

Until now, I had ONLY the documentation of the results I was keeping here and had discovered it had something to do with the cache of our page being old BUT I had not seen ANY forum discussion regarding this issue so assumed it was just the experiment page getting passed over for some reason.

I had noted that once the cache was updated our previous position was restored.

After talking with him yesterday, it became apparrent that we were NOT ALONE. Google indeed had some kind of problem and "lost" lots of cached pages.

BUT - how many people do you know really checked into or keep track of Googles cache of their page. I will say that you here more in the last six months than you ever did before - but that is not saying much.

Here is a link he gave me to where he actually documented his interaction with Google during that frustrating period.

    http://gototom.com/google_information_help_google_com_11-1-04.htm

This just shows that many times we "suffer in silence" and often come to believe that ours is an isolated incidence when indeed there are un-detected problems going on behind the scenes. There is just ho "din of the crowds" to call everyones attention to a problem.

What I am trying to say is, we may never really know why the allinanchor is doing what it is doing here as there are not enough people who pay close enough attention to it on a regular basis. "There are not enough crayons to draw a picture" - so to speak.

BUT - If I were a bettin' person, this is once again, some sort of a cache "thing".

I don't really think it's theming. I think it's more along the lines of a backlink update gone horribly wrong (or perhaps an entire sweep of backlinks being redone from the ground up).

The reason I say this is because backlinks are what primarily determines allinanchor. Without them, allinanchor doesn't exist. In our case, our backlinks are fluxuating wildly, and in turn so are the position results. I really wish google wasn't so stingy with their backlink info. It's as if they hide it to protect something they don't wish us to see. MSN shows it. Yahoo shows it.

I do believe, however, that theming will ultimately takes its own course in the future. That's, in my opinion, the true definition by which sites should be ranked. Just stuffing links to a particular page shouldn't impact SERPs as much as it does, but that's the current way it works, so that's how we work to get our pages where we want them. Theming would benefit all users and SEOs alike.

Frankly I've never looked at google's most recent cache or checked for reported bls, especially since google started to purposefully under report them.

What is there to say. The dance has been going on for over 2 weeks. The site continues to vacillate and some of the data centers, or groups of data centers report widely different numbers for both serps and allinanchor. I certainly don't know what is going on.

As a former fan of Superman comics I firmly believe we are seeing Bizzarro google world from a different dimension.

    Dave,

I think you've finally got it. We don't know what is going on. I'm sure Google doesn't know what is going on. All attempts at explaining it or rationalizing it are in vain. All we can do is wait and see what happens when the chaos clears.

Well, it finally appears that we just may be coming in for a landing!!!

Perhaps, the great February Event 2005 is finally winding down.

The discrepancies between Datacenters is narrowing and although the spread in allinanchor position is wide it too is down to only two different positions being reported.

I would like to note here that given today's results (and certainly all of the data I have collected over the last 20 days) it "seems" that the reported allinanchor may NOT be the actual allinanchor that is being used by Googles algoritim.

There is no correlation between the rise and fall of a position and it's reported allinanchor position. In fact, it has been visible many times in the last 12 days that I have been keeping a record of allinanchor, that the inverse be true. That is to say that, the reported position dropped while the allinanchor position rose!

It is important to point out that today's reported allinanchor position was very misleading because a closer look at the report shows that allinanchor was almost a dead tie between position #8 (16 Datacenters) and position #35 (17 Datacenters).

edited to add: I just checked the allinanchor again across all of the Datacenters and as of 9:17AM EST...

21 Datacenters are now reporting us at position #8 for allinanchor. A quick check on our regular position shows all still between positions #41 and #43. So indeed, allinanchor results (as reported) are moving independent of the regular serps.

So things are still moving in a positive direction.

    Caryl

Again, here are the links of the two tables I have been keeping in case anyone wants to see if changes continue throughout the day...

    AGAIN Today,

It is what is going on behind the scenes that we need to be aware of.

To glance at the "reported" positions would indicate little change but that is far from accurate!!!

    Yesterday:
    2/21/2005 [2 DCs #41, 27 DCs #42, 4 DC #43]**(Note: Allinanchor #8 on 16 DCs, #35 on 17 DCs)

    Today:
    2/22/2005 [17 DCs #42, 11 DCs #80, 2 DC #81, 11 DC #84]** (Note: Allinanchor #16 on 15 DCs, #29 on 18 DCs)

Note: If you look at the tables you will see that, against all logic, there appears to be an inverse relationship between the regular position and the allinanchor position! The higher the position, the lower allinanchor position and vise versa.

The second link/Table is the same data as the first only organized by C-Block which makes it MUCH easier to read.

Patient has contacted me with an UPDATE on his links!

Although this should have an effect on our placement, I can see no logical reason that these links or any of our links would be causing Google to report the results we are seeing right now.
