At some time today between 8:AM and 1M Google once again rolled back the Backlink Update on Datacenters...

This is the second time that the Update was applied then rolled back on these same Datacenters!

Boy, this latest dance is long term perplexing. I glanced through the full report and virtually from the beginning the data centers would show slight variations on ranking...but never the level of variance as over the last several weeks (It appears as if only two recent days have had minimal ranking variance).

Just a godawful long period of unpredictability, and inability to see where or how the site is settling down for the time being...if there is a time being.

Are there any other sites experiencing the same dramatic variety of ranking changes (let alone variety of allinanchor changes).

Comments on these changes are all over the board on the chat boards. I suppose it will be some time before SEO's begin to characterise this superbowl dance. (Maybe google bet big on Philadelphia winning!)

I would like to point out here that what continues to go on right now is NOT effecting my whole site. Some of my pages/keywords are the same as always. Had I been focusing on some other page/keyword, I would not have detected significant change at all.

Also, with the other Clients site we talked about earlier in the thread. That changed occured and hes remained in the "new" position ever since.

So, a number of thing have transpired (and continue to unfold) since Feb 3rd and this is what is causing confussion.

Some SEOs witnessed no changes at all (Lucky bastards) while others witnessed a change and it was over. Some are STILL witnessing changes, as we are here with this PAGE.

As I have said before, most people are not keeping records or are they checking across all of the datacenters, so their claims that their pages are fluctuating are just being dismissed by those who believe the whole thing is over or never existed.

The nature of this February EVENT as I have just described, will be why it WON'T be really labeled as anything. Even folks who have been following this experiment feel that nothing is really happening on Googles end.

Unfortunately, the lack of collabrative documentation on allinanchor, will most likely obscure what is really going on here. We may never know if Google has changed it's roll somehow or it's effect on the serps.

Only time will tell.

edited to add: I continue to update the tables. Positions are still changing. The Update roll back on the Datacenters that happened yesterday is still "rolled back".

In essence, the Fat Lady has STILL not sung.

I am now seeing a difference among the datacenters for our sites. Earlier this update had made small positive moves for us, now it is back and forth between old results and new (sort of) but mostly still having positive movements.

There are far too many folks in this forum that are discounting the fact that people who now claim to see these changes are just witnessing "daily flux".

This is NOT DAILY FLUX! There are definately people who have been around long enough to know the difference.

debunked helped me remember, in another thread, that I do indeed have some evidence to support the changes in allinanchor!

February 7th was the first time I noticed changes across the Datacenters for the experiment page, that is when I started recording that info as well.

At that time I used the Keyword Analysis Tool to get the Top Ten results for our page here.

I captured the results and posted all three results here...

You can see at that time the changes in the Top Ten sites between the Datacenters BUT also note from the ones represented in all three tables, the changes in their allinanchor rating!

It appears like the experiment page is slowly moving toward some more settled position, even as there is still lots more variance in data centers than at virtually any time prior to this February dance.

One of Caryl's points earlier hit me. As mentioned some pages and keywords are essentially unaffected and some have ridden this roller coaster. Even after dramatic changes, like Caryl's client that zoomed to a #1 ranking from buried...as you report there has been no wild dance since then.

So I'm curious why some keyword phrases have resulted in pages going through wild dances while others are hardly affected.

Even though I like quick answers I've learned this is not the place to get them. I don't expect one. Regardless it is curious as to why this page is subject to so much dancing for so long for the keyword phrase sleeping bags.

I'm guessing that this latest google "filter" in some way addressed sites wherein the optimization came through one extreme method...i.e. lots of anchor text backlinks of only one phrase. Some people are warning about this. Nobody has proven this to date. Possibly time will tell as to what google targeted and what they didn't.

Others have stated that google may not have the capacity to handle all its pages. Even if this is true why are some pages relatively unaffected and others subject to a wild ride? Maybe the capacity issue comes into play where the filter is applied. Who knows?

Just thought I would bring up these questions.

One big difference between the page that came back to #1 and stayed and the experiment page is that my clients page is really targeting a non-competitve keyword phrase.

The way I determine whether or not a keyword is competittive is that I look at the top ranking sites and see how many of the top sites are also the top sites listed in the results for allinanchor.

See a Comparison of the Keyword Analysis of the two sites.

Note that the top results are for my clients site. Only two of the Top Ten have targeted the keywords for allinanchor (indicating they may be targeting the phrase).

Then look at the results for the experiment page. The allinanchor positions of the Top Ten nearly mirror the actual Top Ten! Obviuosly, the phrase is being optimized for. Allinanchor is NOT playing a big role there.

So, there is your Apple/Orange thing there.

Now, if Google is "playing around with" or "tweeking" allinanchor, it will ONLY really effect the positions of pages that depend heavily on allinanchor for ranking as the experiment page does.

Look at that table again and the results for sleeping bags, position #9 it got there with no ranking in the top one hunbred for allinanchor, 0 Backlinks and no PR. So, apparently, the size of the website and the mention of the keyword on one of it's pages gave them enough weight to rank.

If the "value" of allinanchor was being adjusted, it would not effect them at all as they were not dependent on it to begin with.

If you check out the link I posted in my post just above today's Daily Update,
you will note there that it is NOT just us moving around. Other Top Ten "players" were also experiencing changes to their allinanchor rating and some were coming in out of the Top Ten.

This is still happening to us and them alike. There is simply NOT enough time in my day to record all of this.

If Google had applied a "filter" then we would have seen a change and there we would be, PERIOD. You would experience the daily flux from there.

If you change a factor in an equation, you change the results. BUT as long as the equation remains in the changed state, the results will be predictable until.

Pre Feb 3rd: 1 + 1 =2
Post Feb 3rd: 1 + 1 +1(your "filter") = 3

The result will always be 3 unless SOMETHING keeps changing! Well SOMETHING keeps changing and it AIN'T US.

A change in the equation does not make the results erratic and unpredictable! The only thing that makes results change is to continue to change something in the equation.

Google has applied and then rolled back the Backlink Update twice on the same 6 Datacenters.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Let me paraphrase.

Perhaps google established a filter on or around February 2. Google seems to be perfucked...because this thing is going on for weeks.

During this experiment when there were other google changes the serps roller coaster was never this long or this whacked. You could be right. That makes sense.

I still like quick answers. Mabe I'll watch I Love Lucy reruns tonight. Everything gets solved in half an hour.

If you are going to paraphrase me, you ust leave out the word "FILTER", as I do NOT believe in them.

I only used it as an example when I was trying to say if Google added or subtracted anything, PERIOD, the results from THE change would be stable/predictable.

The fact that the results are changing from hour to hour, minute to minute, means Google is constantly tweeking/adjusting whatever it is they have "fixed" (ha, ha,ha, ha, ha)

You must have been one of those kids who sat in the back seat and constantly asked

"Are we there yet?"

Google made changes. For instance your local site shot to the top. I have seen similar changes on similar types of sites. I think in certain types of cases I see greater relevancy. Of course in the boards some people claim that google relevancy is shot to hell!


I see some consistent changes flying around on MSN on a couple of topics. I'm not seeing the enormous vacillating that has gone on with the experiment page in google though. I guess we will have to wait a while till the googleplex gets things smoothed out across data centers.

I hope Ricky and Lucy kiss and make up at the end of the half hour
