Bob,

I do not see where my statement is in error. Below you will see a comparison of today's result for both searches - sleeping bags plural and sleeping bag singular. The same sites are in the top ten for both. However, allinanchor results would indicate that the plural of the keyword is targeted much more heavily than the singular form of the keyword.

The experiment page had absolutely no links that targeted the singular, however, the singular form of the keyword IS contained in the plural AND I believe that most have accepted that Google IS using stemming in their algorithim.

The results below also would indicate to me that most are targeting the plural form of the keyword and NOT the singular.



I would like to continue this in a little different direction (from singular and plural) so I will be copying your question and this reply to the Discussion thread.

Unfortunately, the tool is "timing out" in times of heavy demand. Please try closing your browser window and opening the page again. This should solve your problem.

I've plugged in Sleeping bags and you come up number 1.

I've also used my phrase and am also number 1.

I've also manually done the allinanchor:sleeping bags and my term, respectively, and there's no direct correlation (that I can see). None the less, I find it interesting.

 

That is an interesting tool like the -asdf filter.

For non-sandboxed sites in seems to highlight or move to the top, the sites that have had the greatest amount of recent optimizing or backlinks. We have recently laid off while other sites have been aggressively adding links. Last go around, w/ the -asdf filter we were showing #1; 5 in the general listings. Now we are 4th in the filtered listing and a site that has been busy optimizing and adding links is #1 with the filter.

Not only does it show non-sandboxed results, but it shows recent optimizing (new backlinks).

I guess that tends to show that google devalues recent backlink additions in its filters.

It is very curious why the results change as they do!

Last year I tried to "tweek" a page to do a little better in the serps. It was in position #11 and I thought if I added a couple of links I could boost it to the first page - WRONG!!!

Those additional links resulted in the page falling to the 3rd or 4th page and staying there for the duration of the season.

This season I am back in about the same place. So this year, I created a new page to target for the same keyword and pointed ads from the co-op to it. If this new page gets sandboxed, my old page will still be there.

Isn't that just a pitiful way to have to do business?

Yes, particularly because the backlinks from the coop are fleeting and unpredictable at best. You already know from the recent google patent information there is a penalty/loss if the the spider does not find your link on the page the next time it visits.

 

Well the new page I put up on March 29th and the only external links pointing to the page are from the ad network.

Today that new page is #1 in Google. We'll see how it does with those revolving ad network links.

Wow, you must have a lott of weight.

I am not having that much luck with the coop because most of my sites are new without sufficient weight.Particularly with google.

Do post if you see wild swings in the coop weight. I suspect that is because the links revolve among high and low PR domains.

No, I do not have a lot of weight - the keyword is only somewhat competitve - definately, not as competitive as for the experiment page.

It does seem that the ad network ad flucuate a lot so this may leave my page bouncing in the serps.

As many of you know I have been also monitoring DAILY the cache date of the experiment page.

In the past we had definately two times (June-Aug and this last January-Feb)when Google "forgot" to index this page for long periods of time. The results of this is NOT pretty.

In late February I discovered that the cache date seemed to be "stuck" on Feb 7. By March, it remained there. So I went and opened, saved, and uploaded the page with the new time stamp.

On March 9th Google updated the cache date and has done so daily until 4/12/05! Below are the recorded cache dates and times for April.

Google not only has stopped updating BUT is using a cache from a previous date! Mind you, look at the time difference from April 8th.

Anyways, today I opened, saved, closed and uploaded the page with the new "fresh" time stamp. We'll see if Google starts caching again on a daily basis soon.

I don't think that comment is right, it was only a patent application and encompased a lot of other ideas as well.
There is nothing to indicate that it has been put into practice.

I agree and even go further to say that the "Patent" was NOT filed under Google but by 10 people associated with Google. If you read it carefully, you will find that it was filed to "protect" broad based ideas BUT not specific code.

If this patent is granted, the holders will stand to profit big time if any search engine, including Google, decides to evolve into those areas covered by the patent.

For $500. each, these ten people may have only been speculating on the future of search technology and stand to gain plenty if they are right.

Just my 2 cents...
