Well, it has now been 7 days since the cache of the page has been stuck on Apr 17, 2005 15:32:38 GMT and once again, the page has "slipped" back to position #5 .

My first inclination is to go in right now and update the "time stamp" in an effort to have Google update their cache of the page and return it to position #3.

BUT - I think I will continue to monitor, for a short while anyway, to see how things progress on their own.

What is your feeling on the cache date and rankings. Is it the cause or is it the symptom?

 

Patient,

The aging cache date seems to precede a drop in Google ranking.

The big question remains - WHY does Google "forget" to update the cache?

The aging cache date is most likely a "symptom" of something else going on. The aging cache date seems to be an "indicator" that signals a problem.

I don't believe that the cache date, in and of itself, is the cause for the ranking decline.

The main problem here is the sample size is too small (one page) to draw too many conclusions from.

It is definate that in this experiment, four times in less than a years time, an aging cache date preceded a decline in rank. Updating the page's "time stamp" resulted in Google updating it's cache - which then resulted in the page returning to previous results.

If this evidence gets others to pay closer attention to cache dates then maybe we will be able to get a better understanding of what is really occuring here.

For me at least, when I see a page's position start to slip one of the first things I check now is the cache date.

So what would you suggest on getting a daily caching? I've got a PR5 page that seems to be on a 10 day cache cycle.

 

You did answer my question and I agree that your opinion is the most logical i.e. the old cache date being a symptom rather than a cause.

It is obvious that G is willing to spider the same page every day and this is presumably related to to the number of links it finds to the page as it crawls the net. Why it stops for days, weeks, or months is a mystery. Why it reverts from a newer cache to an older one is also a mystery.

 

Boy, this is still very much a mystery to me!

Have you tried updating the "time stamp" by opening, saving, and re-loading to your server?

This daily fluctuation is incredible. I check the same datacenters every day so it isn't just a difference from datacenter to datacenter.

Indeed! You just have to conclude that Google can even count.

Now in fairness to the recent variation we made some changes to the InfoPool a week ago. We organized all the articles into categories and added category pages. We finished this on Friday April 22 and didn't realize until Monday April 26 that there was an error in many of the hyperlinks and many of the articles could not be found. However that doesn't explain the wild swings of the last 3 or 4 days.

By my count the "sleeping bag" link can be found on 128 different pages in the InfoPool. Google has reported as high as 115 and that was probably correct at that time. But since then we have added the category pages and some more articles.

I just checked and several of the new category pages were cached today. But others are not currently cached at all including the oldest category -- it's been around for several months -- and all the article that fall under this category.

So I would say that what is really changing from day to day is the number of pages Google has cached. Why should this vary radically?

 

I ahve a PR7 and it is on a ten day cycle as well. Funny thin is my PR4 is cached on a daily basis.

 

I've tried the updating the pages daily (since my primary SEO duties are on Blogger pages) and that has little effect. Maybe it has something to do with the pages that link to you...

 

That just makes no sense at all!!!! Neither does compar's site fluctuating by nearly 50 pages on an almost daily basis.

A client of mine changed the title of his main page on Saturday. Yesterday (Sunday) Google updated the cache of the page. Today, when you do a search in Google the title in the results is the OLD title but viewing the cache of the page shows the new title.

Clearly, Google "processes" information regarding a page and stores it in a separate location. Any benefit from my clients change will not be reflected in Google until Google has "processed" the new information.

This may be where "sandboxed" sites get caught up! They are indexed. They are cached. BUT Google has not "processed" them yet. Only musing here...

Perhaps Google just can't keep up...

This is off-topic on the google cache date, but it is astonishing in view of what occurred during Feb-March how consistent the dc's are for both serps and allinanchor. On the other hand what was probably astonishing was how wacked the data centers were over that period.

If you look over the Complete Report (the entire history of the page) you will see that, indeed, the Feb/Mar time period was the exception not the rule.
