    Hi,
    I'm working at a publishing company. They would like to move one of their category pages to a totally new, different domain and rename that category page and move all of the old articles to the new site: example.com/xy/ => xy.com = the new site

    example.com/xy/article1 => xy.com/article1

    example.com/xy/article2 => xy.com/article2
    Etc.

    example.com/az/ = the new name of the category page on the existing site

    What would be the best way to make these changes with the less harm? Should they 301 redirect all of their articles (example.com/xy/article1 => xy.com/article1) and redirect the old category page to the new one? Is there anything else they should do?

    If you want to redirect one of your category pages to a totally different domain with minimal harm to your SEO, there are a few best practices you can follow to ensure that your search engine rankings are not negatively affected:
    1. Use a 301 redirect: A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect that signals to search engines that the page has moved to a new location. This type of redirect passes on the majority of the page's link equity to the new page, which helps to preserve your existing search engine rankings.
    2. Maintain the same content: If possible, try to maintain the same content on the new page that was on the original page. This will help to preserve the context and relevance of the page for search engines and users.
    3. Update internal links: Update any internal links on your website that point to the old page to point to the new page instead. This will help to preserve the link equity of the page and ensure that users are redirected to the correct location.
    4. Monitor your search engine rankings: After the redirect has been implemented, monitor your search engine rankings to ensure that they have not been negatively affected. If you see any drops in traffic or rankings, you may need to make further changes to your website to help mitigate the impact of the redirect.
    By following these best practices, you can minimize the harm to your SEO when redirecting a category page to a different domain. However, it's important to keep in mind that redirecting pages can have an impact on your search engine rankings and traffic, and it may take some time for your rankings to recover.
