    Hello Everyone,

I wanted to get your opinion on this idea I have for myself. Right now I'm just working on and off with web design. I'm launching a big content website that will be updated daily very soon but will only need 2-3 hours of my time but will eventually only require a little as I hire people to do the work.

My idea is this, for web design I would like to work on 4 designs a week, spending 2 hours a day on each one working smart and hard which would even out to 8 hours a day. I want to work about 12 hours a day, so I figure from 9-5 would be 100% focused on web design then after 5 would be 75% on my own content website and 25% on web design. The 25% will be used for marketing and other such things.

Would this work out or do you guys have any other suggestions? since I'm not in a relationship or have any other things to stop me from working all the time I would love to work a lot and go out 2-3 times out of 7 days with breaks as well as I do workout and love to watch movies, play video games or basketball to relax.

Please throw any other ideas at me, if my content website does not work out as planned then of course I'll go full time on web design which will only require 9-5 or maybe less. I just figure 4 clients a week is good enough for me and 10 hours will be spent each week on there website or maybe less depending on there project.

    Thanks,
    Scott

It sounds like a good idea, but imho things rarely work out as planned. Like other contract work, you'll find clients go very quiet for periods of time followed by an onslaught of business that can be difficult to keep up. This can also be seasonal (I used to like Christmas before I was a web designer!)

My work load tends to fluctuate a lot, so I keep a never-ending task list on my desk of non-urgent client work, internal project improvements and new internal projects. That way if the tumbleweed rolls in I still have plenty to get on with.

    Hope this helps :)

Why don't you take on web design work on a monthly fee rather than an up front fee, 4 clients a week would soon roll into a nice regular monthly income for you building, maintaining & hosting the clients sites and being paid monthly to be there for small updated/changes.

Either way, yeah I started just working in the evenings on my sites and within a year they offered a full time income so if your willing to do the time and use it wisely then best of luck, as you say the design work 9-5 would be your base and let you work and develop your personal sites.
