I dont know how this popped into my head, but it did.

Think of a website where forum owners could purchase software that basically unified all member lists. Meaning that users and posters only register at one central site and then have the ability to freely post on every forum that has the software installed without registering. The plugin or script would update every forum it is installed on with new registrations as they happen.

The advantages to the forum owner....
It would encourage new users to post and visit their forums, seeing as how they wouldnt have to go through the pain in the ass process that is registering, setting up your profile, etc.

The advantages to the poster/forum visitor...
Would only have to register on the central site and would only have to configure their profile once. When they need to update they just go to the central site and boom, their one and only profile is updated. Sorta like Microsoft's .net thing, where one login could be used to access multiple sites.

There would have to be other options, such as custom profiles for a specific site, and of course customizable signatures for each forum.

This could go huge, Im working on the details of this but still have a ways to go.

    What do you guys think?

I dont know how you are going to get the 5 billion existing forum owners to make this change. It is an interesting concept though. Didnt ms try to do this with passport? Also, what if I have the name bob123 at forum A and someone else has it at forum B, how would you deal with that issue?
