I would suggest using joomla as it has more features and available stuff to make a great news site. There's a ton of professional news themes you can use for it.

Many theme you can test for free. For practice, you can use free theme, but if you plan to sell this website for next month of in several month, better to choose premium theme with your own customization.
Also, news theme must be configured in featured post, auto thumbnail, why don't you search in google, the must have plugin for wordpress in auto thumbnail for your compatibility.

A free Wordpress theme called Cutline is a news-type theme and is also seo friendly. Hope this helps

Ya there are so many free wordpress themes in w3. You have to check whether the theme is SEO friendly and Feedback facilities.

Yes you can get a nice and professional looking wordpress site using a free theme. There is no reason to use Joomla as there are a myriad of news related themes and plugins for Wordpress.

This question would be best answered in the "Wordpress" forum.

There are a lot of themes.
The free one and the paid one.

The advantages of the paid one they have their own advance setting and feature that you could use.
The disadvantages of the paid one you have to learn their tutorial and guideline on how to utilize those features.

The free one... welll... you know.. it's free... so don't brag to much or having anything to much except if you understand how to tweak the code. CMIIW.

Oh and yes pixelrage... it's quite right. Should be posted in wordpress forum.
