    you could try using the pen tool to draw the selection, then once drawn make sure the path is complete then right click on the path and click "make selection" hope this helps

    I've never even used a mask in all of my photoshopping. (I've honestly never even watched a tutorial for them.)

    I find it easiest to use the Polygonal Lasso tool to extract the part of the image that I want.

    look for tutorial which teach you how to use pen tool. It's the best tool for extracting shape from image...
