Need help with dedicated servers

Discussion in 'General Business' started by RoboLlama, Jan 25, 2007.

Hello I am using a shared host monster web host now but my site is using all its cpu power and I need to switch to a dedicated server but not sure what to switch to. I need a server that provides a lot cpu power because my site manages to use it all. I am looking only to spend around 100 a month and I need the server to be managed. So if someone could provide me with a dedicated server provider to my specifications that would be really helpful.

o sorry well for control panel yeah as long as I can view my stats of hits and stuff such as awstats and the typical Cpanel that most hosting has. for Location not sure 100% what you mean. for supprt that would be nice to have and windows. for bandwidth atleast 1000 GB

    location is US

well we can go up SOME if we have to. Just something relative. We basically need a host that can provide a lot of cpu power and a good amount of bandwidth.

You have two options -- a co-location server or a business DSL line and your own server. Both are available for under $100 per month.

The advantage of business DSL with a deciated IP address is that you can have as powerful or as many computers as you need to handle the various tasks associated with your website. The downside is you are 100% responsible for all management and security issues related to the machines.

Co-location removes worries about whether or not the machine is in a secure environment, but the more powerful the machine the higher the monthly cost.

I have looked at many places for co-location and the ones that I have used have worked fine for me. But, I stay away from things which are likely to crash the server or saturate the connection.

You can just do a search for co-location servers. Some I have looked at are: ServerBeach and wholesaleinternet and Blacksun

When looking at a co-lo server . . price and control panel are not the only factors. I would get a machine with the maximum RAM that I can afford. Make sure there is enough hard drive space, and lastly, worry about the CPU. Do not forget you pay extra for control panels, but they will help you accomplish things that it might take many, many months to do on your own.

Co-location servers are your responsibility. If you want some kind of management contract to monitor your server and keep it going, that is going to cost more, and could leave you disappointed. Never forget, you pay for what you get. A $100 per month computer with badwidth is not going to buy you a lot of attention from the vendor. They expect that you know what you are doing. Pay close to $500 per month and you will probably receive a lot more services.

    Try http://siterollout.com

I've been with them and they're pretty good as uptil now.

You could get something really nice for around $100. ;)

I once had a windows box for $85 but the specs weren't that impressive. Try http://fdcservers.net for that. :)

I think the problem in your equation is managed, I'd be really surprised if you got a reasonable dedicated box managed for this budget, unmanaged yes, but managed....perhaps you might be better off looking at a VPS package or similar. If you don't mind spending extra I personally used Liquidweb.com for my managed box (ie the box with stuff on it I don't want to go down) they aren't the cheapest but the management is first rate, unlike some other so-called "managed" boxes I've had, these guys really are 24/7/365. Moral I guess is you get what you pay for.
