Need to start a new business, but what?

Discussion in 'General Business' started by aab1, Dec 1, 2011.

I want to start a new business to have an additional source of income, I currently sell a few items I make myself on eBay and my website but want more sources of income and something that doesn't require shipping items to customers (I already do more than enough of that with my existing businesses).

What sort of business could I start that could make me a minimum of an extra $500 a month once started and that would not require shipping items? I'm good at web programming and could make a website that offers some sort of service unless you have better ideas for me.

Can anyone please give me suggestions for a new business to start to get some extra income?

    Thanks

If I may give advice, you run the two businesses fit this

    1. Google Adsense

You can create a theme with its own design, so that your unique theme.

    2. Flippa

This is the most interesting, create a website design as attractive as possible, then selling there. Need not be expensive, which is important you profit and move on continuously

The only issue with Flipping websites is it's a job, not a business. How about an offline biz? OR a proxy network? Or a webhosting company?

First start out by doing something you like-Try to think of something you do everyday, something you would do for free. Then go from there.

I think you shouldn't go far away from your previous business because you have experience

    Thanks for the suggestions.

My main goal was to increase the sales of my existing products and I will be launching a redesigned website shortly which I hope will help. I also have products I sell only on eBay, I'd like to start websites to sell them outside of eBay as well but am not sure how I'd send traffic to get sales. Almost every website I started to sell my items outside of eBay didn't get any sales other than existing eBay customers then ordering from my site.

Would it be worth making websites to sell my other products and how would I make sure people find them and buy which is the part I always fail at.

    Thanks

I'll suggest that you improve your current business. If your current business is making you a $2,000 income, then a 25% increase isn't astronomical. It's quite achievable.

There are different ways, I'll point you to few:

    1. Increase your productivity, for example, automate the shipping process so you can handle more work.
    2. Improve quality, increase your prices.
    3. Expand. Hire new people to work for you.

Do what you are good at. Starting a business is hard. You probably know that since you are running one.

    Thanks, about your points:

    1. I am working on improving productivity and investing in devices that will save me time (but what do you mean by automate the shipping process?)
    2. I'm also doing this and in fact I think my sales increased after nearly tripling the price of an item
    3. I currently don't need to, and can't afford to, hire employees

    Thanks

Terrible advice. Web Hosting companies are a dime a dozen. There's way too much overhead and work that goes in to that business and the yielded return is far too minimal unless you have a ridiculous amount of paying customers.

My advice is...you can design websites for other people and become a reseller and resell hosting space to those same clients.

    -or-

since you only want to make $500 a month. Participate in affiliate marketing focusing on a product that interests you.

No don't build Flippa sites, build something that will be more long-term for you.

I'm sure you don't want to spend to rest of your life making and thinking of new business ideas and websites... It's a nightmare...
