    Photoshop because it is widely used, which means more suppor, more plugins and more addons.

    Some people are pretty skilled with paint. ;)

    GIMP = Free.
    Fireworks = Good.
    Photoshop = Awesome.
    Corel Programs = Pretty good.

    Photoshop is the very best, but can be overwhelming. Look for some beginners tutorials.

    I agree with you there :)

    Photoshop can be hard to use though, stick with Coral Programs if you want user friendliness.

    Fireworks is pretty crap for somethings, as it is designed for Web Buttons etc/

    I Find my self doing a lot of graphics work in Fireworks, i like using adobe products together like flash and fireworks at the same time because images are able to be dragged between the programs pretty easily.

    Photoshop and InDesign are all I ever use (for web and print). I love 'em both.

    BUT, Paint Shop Pro is great value for money too.

    Photoshop is the most appropriate, better than anything on the market for graphics.
    I used gimp before it (mainly because it was free and i didn't have any financial resources), but when i switched to photoshop it was like trading your father's old car for a brand new mercedes. you can do pretty amazing stuff with photoshop, see my examples of free templates gtempl.blogspot.com
