There anen't many around at the moment as it was only released a couple of weeks ago and it's still in beta. If you want to see it in action then take a look at the demo on the site.

Early December as far as I know, I have the insiders versions, though I'm going to wait for it to get out of beta before I create any real sites with it.

Not sure what's going on with Alicia. phpizabi.org is down.

There is a thread on sitepoint about social networking. Someone made this post below quoting the license agreement which is very interesting:

    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3131034&postcount=263

I went to look for myself and it appears they modified the license agreement on 11/6/2006 to read:

Not sure how this would hold up legally, but interesting nontheless.

Very interesting, I wonder why they would want to add that on their license. It just goes to show that it's always good to read the TOS. :D

Alicia is by far the best social networking software out there. It has yet to be publicly released, but is currently available to 'Insiders' for $10.00. I'm currently running my site off it, and besides the odd problem here and there (as common with any BETA piece of software), things are running pretty smoothly. The community's getting in on the project and creating templates, hacks and modifications for it, which are then distributed in the administration control panel via a little something we call the PIO ;)

I would also like to see your site. Tell me when are they thinking of releasing Alicia to the general public?

    Hello,

I have read this forum for weeks, and have been both entertained and dismayed. I can understand that everyone holds their allegiances to each piece of software but their is something to be learned from both.

I have the had the pleasure to speak with the owner of Buddyzone many times, and have been in close contact with the COO and sales manager of PhpFox. And you know what, they are all really good people that want to offer a really good product.

PhpFox has been around for a while now, and is getting better, although their license tracking is not the greatest, ugh. I found their support to be helpful at times, but NEVER non-existent. phpFox is a great STARTING point.

BuddyZone's owner is a great guy. Very nice, and easy to talk to. When a situation arises, he wants to fix the problems. He has asked me what I would like to see changed, and he is warm to the ideas I have given him. You know, he understands that his script isn't perfect. However, he wants to make it better. Again, this script is a great STARTING point.

They both offer their strengths and weaknesses. We should see if the Fox and Buddy could mate, and Handshake of sorts? Hahah. Maybe.

If nothing else, they are both better than Alstrasoft.

Hugs and Kisses phpFox and BuddyZone,
    Brian

Custom is nice, but I'm interested in taking advantage of the residual products that have been built for myspace (i.e. skins, players, etc.) I started with PHPFox and was happy with it until I realized I had purchased 1.0.9 shortly before they came out with 1.1.

As the EJRaven explains, PHPFox is ugly! If you like to feel like you're coding in circles, go for PHPFox.

I recently switched to BuddyZone, which has a PHPFox migration tool to move old accounts (SWEET!). As soon as I finish my customization of BZ, I will be switching it over. I've been very please with how easy it is to customize BZ and come near the "must-look-exactly-like-myspace" feel. 140 million people are growing increasingly used to myspace. I think offering a competeting brand with the same tools will help grow your userbase. BZ has done a good job at mimicing myspace's nav and style.

Like I told Zoint's owner, his software has a great potential, with IPB's version on the horizon it will be a great addition to any existing forum, but then again it's not a complete solution.

    Hi everyone,

I am interested in both Aroundme and BuddyZone for www.links.com. Has anyone used them both. I am interested in any experiences with stability of software and technical support. Thanks.
