Online Degrees

Has anyone here received a degree from an online school? I'm interested in what online school you went to and what you thought of the courses/quality of education vs what you would expect (or received) from a more "traditional" school.

Even if you haven't atteneded an online school what do you think of the concept of online education in general?

In general I think it has lots of potential. At the moment I think the quality of education you get is below par. I have always felt a degree in any field gives you a leg up over non-degreed person. If only way I could get a degree was by taking online work I would jump on bandwagon or I would consider taking online required courses in which I had no interest. I heard an evaluation on tv saying employers do not view online degrees as being equal to traditional degree as as ged is not equivalent to high school diploma.

I am taking an online degree on hospitality management at the Thompson Institute (http://www.educationdirect.com/)

Just be careful and check that the school you are interesed in is acredited, there are loads of shitty schools out there that will end up giving you a useless piece of paper when you are finished.

    Thank you.

Accredidation aside (assuming it's on the up and up) is there anything else you look for?

I studied Cambridge English via a (Dutch) company which is now mostly Online but back then mainly on a send-stuff-home basis. All the course contents are still wrapped up and sealed, I passed with a C nontheless :)

I've looked into online studies quite a bit. Some require you to come down to a certain place and do physical presence exams, others mark via online exams. That could make a significant difference.

I still believe in going to school, literally going there. It's not just what you learn inside the classroom that counts. Being around other students can also be a learning stuff.

I find that program very helpful; especially for professionals who don't have any choices but to work while at the same time continuing their studies. ;)

You know the English travel company 'First Choice'? Well they run alongside an online school that does courses. One of them is Holiday Representatives. You know what a holiday rep is, right? Well this teaches you all about that Industry and how to deal with customers, ect. That sort of stuff.

I only did it for a hobby though to be honest, as I've done Leisure and Tourism and was doing Travel & tourism. I started that thinking i could get it done asap as it's piss easy. Except it's not. And because most of the work and research has to be done online it's hard having forums like these stopping my concerntration.

Anyway, I now want to do Hotel Management instead but no way Would I do another online course.

hehe, I know what you mean. I took an online class about a year ago and what shoudl have taken a couple hours a week alwasy ended up taking 2 - 3 times as long as it should. I get online and my mind, and fingers, start wandering. Next thing I know it's 5 hours later and haven't done a damn thing related to what I sat down to do.

    dude, i feel ya!

What is it with being on the computer and time just 'dissapearing'

I cannot seem to be able to come on here without hours just flying by as if they were seconds. It's wierd!

Oh well, I really have to sort myself out because I'm getting nothing done. The only thing that could stop me from coming on here is if Shawn banned me.

    Shawn?

Sometimes you gotta be cruel to be kind. =D

I think that's the way it is when you enjoy what you're doing....or at least I hope that's the reason. I've lost months and months of my life online but don't regret it for a second. It's been, and still is, an interesting place to be...online that is;)

Trying to focus while I'm online (like taking a class) is tough though.
