Openly discussing money/salaries

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by Nitin M, Dec 7, 2005.

In a different thread this statement was made:
I find it really interesting because when I was growing up at a very young age my parents were very open about money as was my extended family (uncles, aunts, etc.). I always knew my parents salaries, how much they had invested in diff accounts, etc.

Now, married and with 3 kids, I know I sometimes really startle people with my open statements about money. But with all my friends I'm very open with my income levels, etc. and I know their's because over time they've loosened up around me.

IMHO ... it isn't about showing off or being nosey. It's just about information sharing and I don't see anything wrong with it.

Online I don't share the info because here I think there's too much opportunity for it to come back and hurt you.

Sorry Nitin, but I'm missing the intent of your thread.

Is there a question or opinion being solicited?

Yeah, just curious if most people keep their income and financials under wraps even with friends and family or if most people here typically share the information.

Being open about how much you earn over here can get you kidnapped...

People are kidnapped here and then stupid randsoms of $25k are asked for... Just imagine the trauma you go through, and all for that stupid amount? And what is worse is that kidnappers usually cut off fingers or ears to give more pressure to the family

I really need to get out of here... I don't even tell my dog how much I earn now

I try the best I can to keep income under wraps even with family. Money tends to spoil things with friends and family - not in all cases though. I would like to be more open but it just doesn't work in certain family dynamics.

Fair enough ... I don't openly discuss finances, but I have friends and family from whom I don't mind discussing them with; I don't necessarily volunteer the information, but I'm not cloak and dagger about it if asked .... except from the property tax assessor :)

Holy shit fryman. I see that kind of thing on TV about mexico or other less developed countries and I ignorantly think it's just media hyping up the 1 or 2 cases a year. That's some seriously messed up stuff there... good luck getting up to Canada for that school you were looking into.

That did make me laugh, but I guess it would be a serious problem there.
I generally dont go into much detail with friends or family as they think I'm either
    a/ very lazy
    b/ very lucky
Both of which I would disagree with, it has caused problems in the past and all I can say is dont lend money to family/friends and expect to see it again:p

Oddly enough fryman - wasn't it a dog that gave orders to Son of Sam ...

As funny as your statment may have seemed, many may not realize what a reality that is in your part of North America.

I do - I was raised that way. I never knew what my parents earned. Was told it was none of my business :)

I know people who don't like to discuss it, but I don't really care, if someone wants to know all they've got to do is ask, my parents never kept their incomes a secret for me either.

I don't really talk about how much money I have or make w/ anyone. My parents...and that's about it.

Too many people are sensitive about the subject so I just avoid it. I've ssen people become resentful when they find out how much more a friend is making than they are.

That's pretty much my take on it too. The only three people who know what I make are my business partner, my brother and my girlfriend.
