IMO just try and get a good ranking on Google and you will be right up there on Yahoo and MSN (Way before you get to the top in Google). I wouldn't waste much time specifically working on MSN and Yahoo as the amount of traffic you get (these days) from these SEs is nothing compared to what you get from Google.

I don't know of a single website that's in the top 10 on Google and not in the top 3 (or at the top) on Yahoo and MSN.

MSN is good when it comes to the "near me" results if you are looking for local traffic. In that case I would recommend have ass many local web sites as possible link to you.

Other than that I will go with dfs' advice.

Well, you can visit the MSN and Yahoo forums for more info. But, here's the summary:

MSN seems to go by the number of BLs, anchor text in BLs, title tags, keywords in the content, keywords in H1 tags. In other words, you could do quite well for a fairly competitive keyword with 200 odd BLs and good content. Moreover, MSN usually seems to rank only the top level pages (home page) and at the most pages linked directly from the home page.

Yahoo is pretty much the same BUT it is quite hard to get Yahoo to surf your site. And, even when you do get in Yahoo will probably just have your home page for weeks (or even months) before it was crawled through your entire site.

So, submit your site to MSN, Yahoo, Yahoo directory, DMOZ and Google directory and then get on to a link exchange programme of some sort (Not a link farm) where you can exchange links with other webmasters with similar sites. Also, submit your website to as many directories as you can find. You can to the Directories forum for more lists of useful directories.

    So true, so true.

Great post dfsweb. To add to your tips - if you can write articles then submit them to as many article submission sites as you can find, this is a great way of building quality backlinks from similarly themed pages. Powerful.

That's a good point. I have been doing this for my Photography site and submitting the articles to Article City. The articles (under Travel & Leisure for my articles) are usually placed on a PR4 page. They are cached by Google within a day or so. Moreover, they are grabbed off this site by at least half a dozen other sites as well, so a great way to get more exposure (and of course, BLs too).

You could also organise press releases with someone like PRWeb.
