The market is a bit saturated with PHP developers , right now they are super cheap . Design is also full . You can get designers for free if you know where to look for them . You might want to thing about getting some real jobs .

I don't know if that's a good idea... it just crossed my mind... Make an offer to work for free (or for very small fees) for 2-3 projects. Add thses projects to your portofolio to gain credibility. Well, I don't know if this idea works in your case, but maybe I gave you some food for thought at the very least.

Probably the best way to start is too offer cheap( or even free ) services in exchange of some good testimonies.
In this way, you can increase your portfolio and credibility at the same time.

I think what you can do is find those jobs in a forum related with web design and do some of those for a small charge and build some good portfolois behind your profile.

Or otherwise join elance or guru and search for a project.Initially it may be hard for getting your first contract but my expericnce say if you hang out there and build a good profile then winning a bid is not thatmuch difficult.

Show your confidence to your employer.

Frelancer and odesk. You can also participate in forums related to your niche and try getting good reputation there. Also in order to succeed more, create your own website which will be your business card and portfolio. In this case you will not suffer from lack of feedback on freelance resources.
