Ah damnit, I'm agreeing with yo-yo again.

We need to consider the Doctor's right to do business, or not do business, with whomever he chooses.

I own and operate a small (14 person) IT consultancy. If you want to be a client, and I don't like you, NO SERVICE FOR YOU.

I don't care who you are, how many lawyers you have, how much you have paid the lobbyists, or how much you have bribed the politicians. If I don't like you, my company won't do work for you.

This stupid patient can go find some other doctor to take his money.

Will, you misunderstand the case and the country.

In the UK we pay huge taxes so that we get care at point of need, its not private, this case is wrong to build a " we dont serve smokers on" but the NHS is funded through UK tax payers, everyone in the UK has a right to medical treatment as we pay for it every day through our tax system, there is no other doctor.

Ah yes, I had forgotten about that.

Perhaps that's why so many Brits live in the U.S. now. :D

I was thinking the same thing about agreeing with yo-yo - I had to re-read what he wrote cause I thought maybe I read it wrong. LOL

    Common sense...

I don't see the big deal. I think doctors should be able to put up signs like some restaurants have: "We have the right to refuse service to anyone." If they don't like you then they don't have to provide service to you. Why should doctors be held in some special category? The only ones that should not be able to deny any kind of services to patients are ER doctors when the patient has no choice but to be treated by whoever is there.

You always hear fat people complaining because their doctor called them fat. Who cares fatty? What if you took your car in to get new tires and the mechanic said, "Hey fatty the tires on the driver's side of the car are wearing down faster. Maybe if you didn't weigh 600 pounds it wouldn't be so bad"

Why would a patient want to be seen by a doctor that doesn’t like them and why would a doctor want to work on someone that they dislike for some reason?

I refer you in this case to the response I gave Will, this is in the UK and we pay for treatment through our taxes so have a right to it at point of need, there is no choice/go to another doctor, we dont walk about with credit cards looking for treatment paying as we go. We pay for our NHS doctors/nurses, its not a transaction or shopping trip when we go to hospital in the UK.

Of course, if the government is footing the bill for health care, then the smoker is stealing from government and from the taxpayers. He's destroying government property and he should be charged with that!

Is anyone here familiar with the UCMJ? :D

So you're telling me there's only one place to get a doctor and you have to take the doctor you are given?

In the US we don't treat going to the hospital as a shopping trip, but we have choices of who we want to see or don't see. Some insurances have a network of hospitals/doctors that they pay for but there's always choices.

You'll find that many people who you disagree with in almost every aspect of politics has many other of the same stances and beliefs as yourself. That's why friends don't talk politics :D

I very much dislike war and innocent people dying, but I also very much charish freedom, personal choice and responsibility for yourself.

maybe i'm taking this the wrong way but that assumption is so annoying to me, and from my experience so typical of many europeans in general.

in denmark (a place that i lived over the past year and LOVED) it is really crazy how distorted the people's perception of the US is. The reason for it is straightforward: the stories about the US that they hear about are the stories that are CRAZY enough to draw so much attention.

this isn't meant to be an attack on Europeans (I'm half Danish, and loved living in Europe)... it's just a little bit of a rant about the 'european perception' of the US.
