Im having trouble with some brushes i just downloaded ( from here:

    http://www.melsbrushes.wordpress.com )

They're really great designs, but when i try to load them up it says "this file is not compatible"
I'm using photoshop 6 - any ideas? Could the files be damaged do you think?

    ...specifically these ones -http://melsbrushes.wordpress.com/2007/11/29/vector-style-stalks-set-2/
    and these http://melsbrushes.wordpress.com/2007/11/30/splatter-set/

.abr is fine, CS3 will see them for sure.

Maybe it's because Photoshop 6 (not sure) - upgrade!

We all love torrents, no need to hide, so just download it!

as Scorpiono said, the problem is your photoshop version.
the brushes saved in photoshop cs+ probally so it won't be loaded in older versions..

    anyway- GL!

If the brushes were made on a later version than what you are running, they will not run on an earlier version.

So say there were made in CS3, anything below that will not be able to use the brushes

    Hope i helped you.

You need photoshop 7 at least for those brushes. Photoshop 6 has a different brush "recognition system" and it wont find the new version of brushes compatible. You need a new version of photoshop.

it may be needed more than photoshop 7. i had it a while ago and I'm not sure it will work with 7. so upgrade.... it may be the only sollution.

I have CS3 and downloaded them. The are good looking, you got that right. I'm in agreement with the upgrade, however, don't pirate your stuff, go legit, if for nothing else, more professionalism and ethical value.
