I've been using Photoshop and Illustrator since the almost the beginning (early 90's). I learned in school, which is usually better simply because you have a knowledgeable source to bounce questions off of, without which books and tutorials can sometimes be deadends. But of course, most of us on DP are willing to help too. ;-)

You can find tons of online tutorials on the web, not to mention the ones that come with the software. But for books, the best, easiest to read ones I've found (for everything from Photoshop to Quark to Flash, and tons others) are the "Visual QuickStart Guides", published by peachpit press.

I've started a graphic design tutorial site at graphicdesignrx.com. It is a new site so there is not a lot of content yet, however, the content that is there is for Photoshop. The best way to learn it is to just get in there and get your hands dirty! Just start playing with the tools and especially the layers, and you'll start to figure it out.

If you want a specific tutorial created for you, just email me at

Tutorials are excellent to start with. Unlike print books which tend to throw around a lot of theory that won't stick in your memory too well, they provide step-by-step instruction that will add a visual tag to the different functions so you'll remember them easily. I'd suggest starting with some tutorials and then reading a print book. I have no actual training and create the graphics for all of our websites, just having learned from tutorials and books.

If your goal is to expand your technical, image editing, and artistic abilities, then Adobe Photoshop will help you achieve high quality results.
If you don't know where to start in Photoshop, just open any photo, and start editing.....very simple beginning!!!
