Today, I got an invitation to a new social networking site, www.onetikk.com and I joined that to explore. I got surprised to see a lot of interesting features in the site like Photos, Videos, Social share with FB, Google, Twitter etc. It is more oriented towards travel, tourism, hotel booking and destination guides. I can find out many guaranteed cheaper rates for hotels also.

I am sure they must have spend a lot of money in getting all these features. I am really wondering whether they can compete with the big giants like Google, FB or Twitter even though every one started very small.

May be they have some strategy but this idea is haunting me. I am trying to find out an answer to this confusion. If you have any thoughts please share.

There is always a potential for the new social sites.. but it need to provide something special or niche. It is not easy to compete with big giants so a niche idea is going to be the hero.
The new site need to survive for minimum 3 years to make an impression in users mind also ..

As with any product that you introduce on a market you must ask yourself: is there a real need for this? and what do you offer that the competition doesn't?

I don't think there is space for another meat-and-potatoes social network right now. A niche? Sure. But it better be really useful. There's also the risk that if you introduce an unique feature that proves popular the big players will copy it and make it their own. Not an easy market to get into.

I second Kevorkain. If you are coming with a niche idea, the great players in the market can easily replicate it with out much effort. Else you need to plan for a full fledged marketing approach like Big Bang approach if you have lot of funds to pump in.
Else attract some core users using a small network, make them very active and addictive to your network and then launch your niche idea.
