I've looked at several of the CMS scripts. I keep coming back to Wordpress for a variety of reasons. I think its spam protection is the best (Akismet, Bad Behavior and Spam Karma plugins). The separation between presentation (CSS), programming logic, and database management is very good, and it is relatively stable, though the frequent security releases are somewhat of a concern. Because the architecture is designed around blogging, it is simple to install and maintain, with lots of theme and plugin selections. However, there is a cost for this simplicity, and that is presentation and data management flexibility. The theme selection is a big plus.

When I finally firm up the concept for my site, I will probably look at ExpressionEngine as an alternatives to Wordpress. ExpressionEngine is more flexible and appears to be more stable, however it does appear to require more development effort which I do not want to invest in, until I know what my site will look like.

I did look at Joomla and Drupal, and decided the learning curve was more than I wanted to take on at this time, and the development efforts seem to be rather chaotic. The Wordpress team seems to be better organized. Maybe because Wordpress has a simpler. more straightforward architecture, thus it is easier to corrdinate activities.

Another interesting script that I ran across was Pligg, for those who want to mimic Digg.

Hmmm... PHPLD would be one, then Drupal... add to that cmsimple, that would be my top three as of late for web applications...
