Preventing near-sightedness

A few excerpts/paraphrases from the book "Yoga of perfect sight" by Dr. R.S.Agarwal concerning myopia (near-sightedness).

Myopia is caused by strain to see DISTANT objects.

Reading fine print when it can be done without any discomfort proves extremely benefitial. FINE PRINT IS A BENEFIT TO THE EYES WHILE LARGE PRINT IS A MENACE. The reason is that while reading fine print one sees a tiny area at a time, while in reading large print one has to see a large area at a time and the eye feels strain.

To stare is a strain. Strain is cause of imperfect sight.

Palm for a few minutes a few times a day.

If possible, start the day by exposing the eyes to the sun - just a few minutes at a time. Get accustomed to the strong light by letting sun shine on your closed eyelids. Don't overdo it.

Reading in moving vehicles is not harmful. Reading in candle light is extremely beneficial.

Don't use your glasses for reading if you are myopic. Do palming after reading. Read fine print. Reading in dim light is helpful.

Who, me? I am justing parroting what some researchers say. Why, is it some sort of superstition?

"Sunlight is necessary to normal eye. If it is possible, start the day by exposing the eyes to the sun - just a few minutes at a time will help. Get accustomed to the straight light of the sun by letting it shine on your closed eyelids. It is good to move head slightly from side to side in order to prevent straining. One should not take too much sun treatment."

You obviously won't want to look directly at the sun, perhaps looking at it with your eyes closed would help. I'm near-sighted and I can't see anything unless it's up to my nose.

By the way what is palming?

It refers to closing your eyes gently and covering them with the palms of the hands, without putting pressure on the eye-balls. When all light is shut down by palming, one should experience a perfect dark as if in a perfectly dark room. It can be done 2-5 minutes or longer a few times a day. You may rest the elblows on the table or tuck a cushion before them. The purpose is to relieve strain
