Promoting A New Social Networking Site

Discussion in 'Social Networks' started by sp0om, Jun 10, 2006.

The main draw of social networking site is their user base. And if a social networking site has no user base, then ... well, that's the sort of problem I'm having now.

I don't blame anyone. Who would want to become a member of a social networking site with very few members.

How can I promote this site? How can I get people to sign up?

Offer something that the others dont. Have a much better layout and userability than the others (which isnt hard to accomplish)

Most importantly have a TON of money standing by for advertising because no one is ever going to compete with the big dogs.

My suggestion is to make it a niche. Have a social networking site for cowboys only, sports lovers, gay people, ect. Only way to get in the business is through a niche or a ton of cash.

Hope I didnt kill your dreams.

Alright, I have a niche and I have an nice layout (imo (biased)) and I do offer something my competitors don't.

As far as a big pile of money to advertise ...

You don't necessarily need a lot of money to advertise. As long as you offer webmasters a way to market their websites, all you need to do is find the webmasters. And DP is full of them :)

    Freebies are great.

Offer special promotions, give away an ipod or something, where you give something away on random days, and if you visited on that random day you go into the draw to win something big. This should encourage people to visit more often.

    huh? This makes no sense.

Seriously though, good luck with the advertising campaign. I've had some trouble getting constant return traffic to my social bookmarking site. People just come to post their own site and then take off... jerks.

I'm in the same boat. I have a niche, but not enough of a critical mass of users for people to start signing up. My site is www.truplayers.com - a social network geared at poker players. So far only 55 members :(

If you don't have a "pile of cash" as someone said, but a lot of free time, the start blogging your site like hell. If you have a niche Social Network, then it would be easier, because you just look for blogs with similar content and promote your site there. If it's really relevant, it wont be considered Spam and you would be generating a lot of links and traffic...
Although its a lot of work and time consuming.

the most basic way would go with adwords or something similar. i'd advise you have something new that everyone would love.
