Protecting A Company Name Nationwide

If you start a company and you want to protect the company name NATIONWIDE how do you go about this? Do you have to trademark the name? Patent the name? Reserve the name in all 50 states?

To ensure that no one else is able to take a company name in the state I'm based in, I've always registered the company or reserved the name with the secretary of state. However, this doesn't really stop someone from using that company name in another state.

How does someone go about protecting their business name across the United States or the rest of the world even? Also, how expensive/difficult is it to do this?

I believe if you somehow can get an international trademark then you won't need to worry about anything, as your name would be protected worldwide (Except in some countries who haven't signed the treaty [I don't remember the name of it] like India)
