Quality of sites for sale

I have been visiting the sites for sale forum regularly for a few weeks now. I must say I am very disappointed by the quality of sites on offer. Most of the sites are 0 months old or just a few months old and mainly based on free scripts sometimes with minor tweaks. They look completely rubbish to be honest. Would it be wrong to assume that most of the sellers are 13-15 years old?

 

Wrong. You may assume that most of them try to get quick money, buying a domain, trowing some content on it, and then trying to sell... but the "13-15" part is wrong. For many of them, you can see their age... didn't u know that?

 

I have sold 2 original sites with provable revenue at the $2,000+ mark there in the last month or so. I have also seen some other ones in that same boat.

The thing is there is a price to be paid for an original site over the "resell rights" scripts.

I wouldn't say all the sites are crap as there are some gems. You just have to wade through to get to them.

Sifting through the all the dross is time-consuming. Maybe there needs to be two Sites for Sale forums, Established/Quality Sites and Dross/Junk Sites.

 

First of all, something tells me that no one is going to list their site in a category called "Junk Sites".

Anyway, you can also post requests in that section. I have seen a lot of them listing the age requirement, uniqueness and budget get lots of replies.

Its rare on any marketplace to see only great bargains. There are always "less valuable" sites as there are so many sellers that do quick turnarounds as a business

 

I've seen some great sites and dross sites on here, there have been a few that I've been annoyed to miss out on.

It would be good if each site for sale had to specify some of the same info like traffic, age, revenue etc. to save the same questions getting asked repeatedly. Some kind of site for sale template perhaps.

 

I would agree with that...What I never understand is why sellers don't do that on their own. You always get more money with a clean format so they are just shooting themselves in the foot saying "Site for Sale - PR4 - PM me"


I use the question and answer format although I have seen bullet point formats that are pretty good

 

It's expectations like this that leads to a high divorce rate ... okya, maybe that's an unfair analogy.

Going to a flea market, antique auction or garage sale won't transpire into great finds everytime; but, with a little digging through the items will occasionally lead to a great find.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Are there people too attached to their site or concept that leads to over-pricing? Yes, that's why they rarely sell.

Well, now I'm off to Wal-Mart to look for the Junk aisles to find some good deals.

 

How much do you think a site/software like this would be worth...

* PR6
* Several years old
* In the 650,000 range for Alexa
* Includes full rights to an image editing application that can be sold (currently priced at $40) or anything done with; does not sell highly now since has not been promoted
* Site contains some links that must remain in place. Others can be removed.

 

I think it depends a lot on the quality and potenital of the software product... Normally, a site is sold for something like Monthly_revenue X 10-12, right? If the software has potential, you could ask for more than that, else 10-12 is fair (my opinion)

P.S: alexa is a bluff... can be manipulated... I never take their ranking as an important fact...

As for blazemp.com... I would not sell it and the software for less than 3 million...

 

Lots of good points in this thread. I think it all depends on the expectations the buyer has. Small (turnkey) scripted sites are a great way for someone to learn the in's and out's of running and promoting a website. Mostly you get what you pay for and you have to be responsible for due dilligence when purchasing sites over $1,000.00

I agree that there are a lot of turnkey & script based sites for sale... and generally they they offer very little value and are there only so the seller can make a quick buck, but no big deal.

I like the fact that there is a very diverse selection of sites available, something for everyone.

I don't mind searching since I know others hate it and that gives me a major advantage when looking for those "gems", which I have found several times and purchased twice in the past couple of months.

 

The problem I have when searching sites for sale, is the exaggeration and dishonesty seen by some webmasters. It's human nature to build things up, but I often read about traffic levels being a certain level, only for them to be revealed as being lower at a later. Or visits being counted as uniques.

On the main point. I was almost tempted to purchase one cheap site, only to see the person banging out masses of the identical site. What about duplicate content?

 

Yes that is a problem. In general if I am looking to snag a cheap sale then I do so for reasons other than generating ad revenue... since I hardly believe the claims made without stats & screenshots (and even this can be played with)

I mostly buy sites in order to save me time when starting a new site or for promotional reasons. I like to buy sites with PR when possible mostly because that way I know it's indexed by Google and I will be getting instant results when I make changes.

This is also true for link building. If I have a couple of similar sites I might buy one more just to boost the link popularity and help the serps as well as bump up the PR for the next update.

Mind you I haven't devoted much time lately to my newest additions but I hope they'll make a difference.
