Question: Recovering layers/history in photoshop

Is there a way to recover and view the layers of an image in photoshop? For example, say that I was working on a picture using several layers and then flattened the image and saved it. Is there a way I can recover those layers so I can edit the picture again if I saved it as something like .jpg or .gif? Thanks

Made that mistake too ...always save the psd version too. Even if you don't think it is important as you might wanna change something tomorrow and without the psd it's not possible.
