I no longer have the site, but at one time I did very well with a layout like this:

    PIC PIC PIC PIC

    AD AD AD AD

    PIC PIC PIC PIC

    AD AD AD AD

For the highest CTR users must see the adverts before the content. It's that simple, usually.

That doesn't help for ranking purposes though as many directories will reject you, people won't link to you and so-forth.

Personally these days I prefer to hand them the content first and then compliment it afterwards with adverts, so in this case, show them the image and then them let follow on to the advert at the end of their viewing.

It really depends on where your traffic is coming from - if it's paid for or from another source other then search engines, you may aswell shove the adverts in their face. If you are trying to build a quality site with a user base that will rely upon many traffic sources then make the ads compliment. Less earnings in the short-term but long-term it's a better strategy.

Too many people (I myself was on) get caught up in high CTR and reducing the quality of their sites, leading to a drop in people linking, directories approving or re-approving, and then the drop in rankings that go with it.

So it's all about the type of site you are building really! :)

Short-term or long term, will you require people or directories link to it? Then work on a placement accordingly.

My rate my tattoo area doesn pretty well as does the tattoo designs library.
Ultimately your going to get a lot of page views if its an image gallery so anything around 2% CTR would be acceptable for me.

sji, just a friendly advice...reduce your ads on tattoo designs library to 3...TOS does not allow more than 3.

There are only 3 on the site, my adsense rep advised on me on what to do for the site so trust me the adsense team approved and suggested some of my placements/colours. Maybe your ccnfusing the adlink as a 4th?
