Referrer Determins the Ads? Or content?

My blog, Jokes and Funny Pictures, tends to get ads based on the content of the referrer. So once I was browsing using the "next blog" on blogger and I came across a blog about flowers. When I clicked next blog again my site came up and had ads about flowers. Whats the reasoning behind this, why doesn't content determine the ads?

that's strange. your ad content should be based on your content. have you tried refreshing it?

ive noticed this on my website as well - but slightly different. I see much better targeted ads when someone comes in via a search engine with a good "keyword" attached to their referrer...

I believe the referer does effect what the user gets served from AdSense. I have seen it on my sites when I've come through from various sources.

CPC is far higher when a user comes from a direct web search with the keywords your content is tailored to.

I've noticed that the ads change depending on the url. For example, if i go to mydomain.com/tv/show/dvd/ which is an inexcistent directory the browser just shows the main page anyway, but since the words tv show and dvd are in the url, the ads become related to those terms even if the content on the page is the same as without the words in the url.

Maybe the referer's site name is reflected in your urls?

In the AdSense patent claims, a couple of the items buried at the back indicate that query searches and query search history are used as input to the ad selection algorithms.

I can't remember. I doubt it, remember I came across my own blogger blog by clicking on "next blog" button from a blogger site that had to do with flowers, and my site has nothing to do with flowers. Interesting stuff, though, it doesn't always bring untargeted ads though. The results are constantly changing.
