remember back in the day, when you would buy a game and it would come on 20 floppies and you would spend all day installing - swapping disks in and out.

That's exactly how I feel installing linux right now. ftp servers are way too slow, so I'm installing off of cd. No dvd drive in the server and apparently, sharing a dvd drive is nearly impossible on xp pro - which every computer I have with a dvd drive is running.

I could just wait for the dvd files to copy to my hard disk and hold off on installing any other packages until then... but I'm too much of a glutton.

 

The great thing about floppies, was the lack of extra special care they needed. A scratch could really screw you these days.

Yah, right. We're just fortunate enough we were not born right before the second world war and miss all these techno advancement.

 

I remember having Windows 95 on floppy, man that was around 24 floppies I think and quite tiresome, I feel your pain.

 

I remember this, wow that was ages ago..

You'd had to do RUN"PROGRAMNAME" and sometimes after half a hour of loading the computer crashed.

I remember installing games was the biggest pain. I always couldn't wait to play, but then it took an hour to install and you just had to sit there waiting to put the next floppy in so you'd read through the instruction booklet, but that only made you want to play it even more.

 

Sounds like you were lucky..In my day we had to program them out of the back of a magazine first. sometimes took days to do and was almost always wrong in the beggining.

Once in a while there would be a typo so you would have wasted days with no game to play.

Ahhhh....Those were the days

 

Let me guess. You had to program them up hill both ways in the snow, too?

 

My worst install memory is installing Linux and X windows off 52 floppies so we could play network Doom. Only to find disc 51 was screwed.

I hated programming those games from the magazines only to have them not work!!!

Then again, I remember win95 floppies!! what a nightmare!

I always thought it would have been cool to have a highly trained intelligent monkey that could have put the disks in for me. But if I had a monkey that cool I wouldn't have needed to install the games, because I would have just been playing with my bad-ass monkey. I guess it was just a catch-22 type of thing.

C64 Tapes were the "Good 'ol Days"...

I just remember all the pretty colours that would comw up on the screen when waiting for Batman to load...

 

The Spectrum was miles better than the C64, the number of games you could get on a C90 was amazing.

We used to have to flip switches to get the original bits into the memory of the system, then flip the "Next Register" switch. One screw-up and you'd have to start again.

I remember installing Liberation on my Amiga's hard disk. It took over 4 hours because it wanted to pre-render a whole load of the images or something.

...and then it was hardly worth the wait!

And do I remember the disc swapping days. One of my worst experiences though came from one of the Infocom adventure games. You played them off the floppies and as you got further into the game you swapped discs. It started great but after playing a few hours disc 4 (of 7 or something) didn't work. I tried to get it replaced but never got to see the rest of the game
