It's something that encourages people to sign up with their gmail etc. most likely a part of something much bigger that is yet to come.

I would imagine that users using base are already gMail users - and surely if Google are looking for signups, gMail is more of an incentive for users to signup than base...

What does the general public want more - a free email service with *loads* of storage, or access to a classifieds site that hardly has any market share.

    I know which I'd prefer.

Same here, but a lot of people with too much time on their hands like to join Yahoo! Groups etc. Maybe that is the kind of audience Google wants to capture. Just giving them a playground where they can find likeminded individuals to play with :)

Then why not use Google Groups?

I really don't think that this is going to be a social networking tool...

Hey - I could be wrong, but what with Google Groups, Blogger and Orkut - I'd say the social networking aspect has been covered.

Google groups needs to be organized by someone, Blogger sucks ass, and what the heck is Orkut? heh

I think they just want to make it even easier for people to connect and take in consideration there there are dumbasses who wouldn't know how to blog, form a group or really do anything other than click on the next best thing trying to find something or someone special ;)

Base is a more complicated process than Blogger.

Where is the interaction element in base? How do users get in touch with eachother? How to they send messages to eachother? How do they comment on eachothers post?

I don't see any prominent ways of doing this.

So how on earth can this be a social networking tool?

Sorry man - I think you're just looking at this from the wrong direction entirely.

    I don't know either - I'm just saying it's not a social networking tool...

I imagine it's far more straight forward than that - It's for classifieds.

Who knows - maybe you'll be able to tie-in google's payment service to it. Maybe they will add an auction element to it.

    I have no idea. :|

But It's not a social networking tool :p

We aren't trying to start an argument...The average person has no idea what this is for...You said social networking so suddenly I'm thinking there is actual value in spending some time on this....But if at this point there is no actual communication within the feature, then I don't see it.

This isn't an area I am all that familiar with but I would imagine someone is and can add some info. If Shoe and Nintendo weren't in there, no one else would have added theirs. I suspect Shoe sees some value to add his profile in the first place.

The only thing I can think of is that Shoe is interested in how it ticks because he is going to apply the principles in getting better listings in the more traditional classified section.

Outside of that, I can't really see the purpose as far as profiles go.

So that brings up a side point....Should I be listing every product I sell in Google Base?

I don't see why not - so long as you can automate it.

if you think that the time it takes you to get the products inserted into Gooogle base is going to be worth the while then it may be worth a go.

My only concern, is that base simply doesn't have a large enough user base for the time to be worthwhile spent.

It seems pretty straight forward if you use bulk upload. Glancing at the format, I could probably create the file in around 30 minutes. I may give it a shot just to test how much interest it generates.

Let me know how it goes.

It'd be facinating if you managed to actually make some sales out of it.

    Good luck ;)

The only thing I am looking into is interlinking all the products using the additional attributes.

I am experimenting with the profile I set up to see SEO without keyword stuffing, etc right now....I don't really care about winning the prize but am more interested in how I can use it to any advantage.

You mean your profile or the actual profile page for whatever item you posted?

The first one has to be setup in the contact info when you post the item I think, and I have no idea about how to actually see the individual item post.

To actually see the individual post in its entirety....For instance say I was looking to buy a CD:
    http://base.google.com/base/search?q=vanilla+ice&authorid=&hl=en

Take the second one down, where it has ......... at the end of the listing.

How do I see the entire listing?

i don't think you actually can.

Maybe if you don't add an external link when you post the item? (Which kinda defeats the point)

I just found where you can get the item url in your CP...ie

    http://base.google.com/base/items?oid=9553744444440760963

So I guess I could throw a bit of Coop Weight at each product to further experiment with how I can get Google's own pages to rank

Now we are talking a few hours ;)

There is also a "Contact the Poster" link in there which is interesting seeing as how you can only access your own profile
