    I just added a new theme for my news blog. the theme I was using was too narrow and just didnt look right, although it was preset with adsense.

    here is my theme I have installed now, fluid design, and adsense added by me.

    I havent set it up to show the 468 banner from the archive view yet, waiting to see how this grows on me.

    Very nice placement over all. I would recommend to avoid "Advertise on this site". Also I think you can change the color of the title to Blue and change the link color to blue as well. In my experience blue links does a better job than the black ones

    I'd put ad links on the top instead of the banner. Pays a lot better and gets more CTR.

    I just recently got done with an experiment regarding that. Taking that off of my ads provided me with an immediate drop in income shortly after removing it.

    I have a very similar set up to you, I tried links accross the top and they bombed out.

    have a look at my sig, the one on the left.
