Has anyone done a study to find out whether rotating images next to text ads (all should be compliant with TOS) increase CTR ?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Better ask the AdSense team by showing what you are doing.

Just to make sure of what you're talking about here, did you mean a different static image each time the page is loaded, or an image that rotates through multiple photos like a slide show without reloading the page?

If you're talking about a slide show-type thing, that's probably against the AdSense TOS. They don't seem to like motion or animation next to the ads.

If you're talking about having a different image each time the page loads, the user will probably only see one image, so you'll probably have the same results that you'd have with a single image. The technique could be useful to split test multiple images if you had tracking in place to see if the photo of the puppy got more ad clicks than the photo of the girls or the photo of the bicyclists, though.

I meant the later. Everytime you reload page you see a different image.
