Satellite internet

Hi, my apologies if this is in the wrong section, it looked the closest.

I am moving to a more rural area of Spain and was wondering about the benefits/drawbacks of satellite internet. I know it's expensive. But very little else.

What I was mainly wondering is. Will I have any problems sending files up from Dreamweaver to the server. I don't mind if it's a little slow.

When browsing is it quite reliable? I understand that it will probably be slightly less reliable than a hardwired connection.

Thanks for any advice or experiences.
    Jeff

A friend of mine used it for about a year as an experiment for a company for which he was working. It is going to be right down there at bottom of his list with dial up as far as he was concerned. When it snowed or rained he frequently lost connectivity. Do not remember which but either uploading was slow or downloading was slow.

He likes his cable modem better than isdn and dsl.

Good luck. When in the boonies we have to make do.

Yeah, I actually just had a look on that 'how stuff works' and it said the upload was 10x slower than the download. I could live with it as most of my articles take a while to write, but probably be annoying at times.
I see what you mean about the snow and rain. But hopefully southern Spain doesn't have that problem! Be a waste of a move if it does!
    thanks.

Latency with satellite is much higher. Worse than DSL, cable and even dial-up. Not good for online gaming. Satellite providers also have a strict fair access policy so if you do a lot of downloading they may limit your connection.

Latency is the main problem with satellite Internet. You have got to have patience if you are using Skype or any other VOIP. The delay is very noticeable.

First thing to check is whether your satellite connection is using the C-band or KU-band. Just look at the satellite dish size; if it's around 2 meters in diameter, it's a C-band. If you use C-band connection, rain/snow/cloud will not affect the service. KU-band is another matter altogether. The problem is: C-bands are terribly expensive.

2nd thing to check is the bandwidth guarantee. Does the company offer you any guarantee on the upload and download bandwidth?

3rd thing to check is the earth station. What connection does the earth station has to the Internet itself?

The older systems did..most newer ones do not.

I have Direcway and would not recommend it to anyone..well maybe my worst enemies. It absolutely sucks and is not 'high speed' in the slightest.

The only thing it's better than dial up for is downloading software, but they have such a strict FAP that you can't download much before you're cut off.

Weather puts the dish out alot as well, and slows down the system speed, plus the modem forces you to allow it to be the router of your network.

Newer sat systems, and most in Europe and outside of the US from what I've read are better than Direcway so you would need to check out the particular technology as they are different. If it was something such as Direcway though I'd definitely say DO NOT get it.

I have the most expensive satellite connection in the Virgin Islands and it sucks. Yes, I can upload my files with Dreamweaver or whatever else...but this is my only legitimate option. I dont know my exact speed, but in comparision to my office in the States--its painful.

    Avoid at all costs...
