Selling emails addresses

Hi there!

I run a quite big (5,000 unique a day) community website that lives from advertising (banner, sponsored links, sponsored articles etc.).

One of our clients asked us for a quote for a campaign where you can win something but to join the list of potential winners you have to answer a simple question and put your email address. The emails are taken by our clients so they can use it in their future promotions…

The question is how much should we charge them for the emails? And why not more ? What is the price for a targeted email address?

Selling email addresses is bad webmaster practice and I strongly recommend avoiding it at all costs. You lose your member's trust and I personally would never want to be part of a board or community that was selling my email address.

 

If it is purely targeted they might want to go through a ppc program where they only pay for the links they get through your emails.

 

Actually, it's a common practice to have contests for the purprose of email advertising.. however, it is indeed also considered bad practice to sell the lists. The solution? You charge for mailings. A common price, if targeted, would be between $0.10 and $0.40 per address.. I doubt you'd get more.
